Updated 8 days ago
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, grew up in a village in the eastern province of Khost, Afghanistan. During the war in Afghanistan, he worked with U.S. and NATO forces as part of the CIA's "Zero Unit."
During the withdrawal from Afghanistan, Lakanwal and his family were brought to the U.S., without being properly vetted, and settled in Washington State.
This past Thanksgiving, Lakanwal drove across the country to Washington, D.C., went to within one block of the White House, and shot two West Virginia National Guard soldiers, killing one and critically injuring another. Another guardsman fired back at Lakanwal, striking him. As Lakanwal reloaded his pistol, he was tackled by an unnamed witness and then taken into custody.
He is, at this time, charged with murder, attempted murder, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. More charges are expected.
