Land of the Lost is a classic American children's adventure science-fiction television series created by David Gerrold (uncredited) and produced by Sid and Marty Krofft. It originally aired on NBC's Saturday morning lineup for three seasons, from September 7, 1974, to December 4, 1976.
The series details the adventures of the Marshall family: park ranger father Rick, son Will, and daughter Holly. On a routine rafting trip, a massive earthquake causes their raft to plunge over a thousand-foot waterfall, transporting them to a mysterious alternate universe.
Trapped in this "land," the family must learn to survive in a world populated by dinosaurs (including a Tyrannosaurus rex they nickname "Grumpy"), primitive primate-like humanoids called Pakuni (one of whom, Cha-Ka, they befriend), and aggressive, hissing lizard-creatures known as Sleestak. The family takes shelter in a cave and the episodes focus on their efforts to survive, explore the enigmatic world, and find a way back to their own dimension, occasionally aided by an Altrusian castaway named Enik
Rick Marshall (Seasons 1 and 2): Played by Spencer Milligan.
Will Marshall: Played by Wesley Eure.
Holly Marshall: Played by Kathy Coleman.
Cha-Ka: Played by Phillip Paley.
Uncle Jack Marshall (Season 3): Played by Ron Harper, he replaced Rick's character after Spencer Milligan left the show due to a salary dispute.
The show is notable for its ambitious concept and quality writing for a children's series, with scripts contributed by respected science-fiction authors such as Larry Niven and Theodore Sturgeon, and Star Trek veterans D.C. Fontana and Walter Koenig.
Special Effects: Dinosaurs were brought to life using a combination of stop-motion animation and rear-projection film effects, which became a distinctive (and later, cult-classic) aspect of the show's visual style.
Cultural Impact: Despite its limited budget and Saturday morning slot, the original series became a cult classic and had a lasting impact on its generation of viewers.
