Justice, Righteousness, and Mercy

Remembrance Day brings to mind the lives that were sacrificed in epic battles. Soldiers who embraced their duty engaged in the struggle between good and evil. As Christians the battle we fight is no less intense. As soldiers in God’s army do we stand for what is good, and recognize the consequences of evil. This week the horror of the Sutherland Springs shooting brought to mind the scripture that speaks of our violent age. “Because lawlessness will abound the love of many will turn cold.” This lawlessness, anomia, will have consequences. When evil is allowed to flourish it is only those who stand for what is good who will endure. It is the Lord’s loving loyalty that will make them stand.

Words Have Consequences “Be careful with your words,” is good advice to many who have found themselves in the midst of a war of words.There can be grave consequences to the careers of media personalities who misspeak in a very public way. And the average social media user can find themselves lambasted or ostracized for their words. But how important is what we say, when it comes to God’s point of view? Jesus, when confronted by the leaders of his day, had this to say, “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” What did he mean?

Judgement and Justice are vital issues in the mind of the Creator. In teaching the children of Israel the Lord God spelled out in detail his code of holiness - those things that were just and right in his sight. When it came to matters of judgement, the Lord God expected impartiality and a fair application of the laws that he had given the people. In contrast to the unjust rulers of his day, Christ instructed his followers to consider the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy and faithfulness in their relationships with others. When the Lord returns as Messiah to save his people one of his roles will be that of judge executing justice — rewarding the righteous and destroying the wicked. So what does God expect of us today? Do we understand the weightier matters of the law? Pro- Choice? Make the Wise Choice! Today's abortion debate is framed in terms of pro-life or pro-choice, as if they are opposing ideas. But can we believe in choice and choose life? The God of scripture is vehemently pro-choice, as he has given everyone freewill. However, he does not leave us without guidance and the instructions we need to live well. The Lord God tells us to choose, and that the choices we have are between choosing death or life. But make no mistake, for God commands us to choose life! This is not only for our good, but for the good of our descendants, and society as a whole. Our choices make a difference, and not just for us. So what will we choose for ourselves, and our children? The mission that God has given his people is to walk with him and be 'perfect' but this perfection is the result of a growth process . This is the process that will make us spiritually whole and complete and blameless in God's sight. Unfortunately, though many may hear God's instructions and believe they are doing good works for God the reality is that they are deluding themselves. They have missed key components in the process which would help them grow the mind of God. Just as our human brain develops over a lifetime based on our thoughts and practice, so our spiritual mind grows. We become spiritually what we think and practice and God wants us to think and act based on his revelation. We have been given God's Word so we can come to think and feel as he does, so we can love him and his way with all of our heart and mind. So are we listening to God and faithfully applying this knowledge with wisdom and understanding in our daily lives? When it comes to growing the mind of God, practice does make perfect. Are we willing to walk a “straight” path following the good shepherd? And if we do, how does that reflect upon the reputation of our shepherd? Are we bringing honour to his name? Christians are called to a holy calling to lead lives worthy of our master, Jesus, the Messiah. We have been given the gracious gift of forgiveness, so we may become a holy people. God extends his grace, “charis,” his favour and blessings, to his people. But then what? Many people in thinking correctly that we do not earn salvation by keeping the law, then make the false assumption that the law is no longer necessary, or valid. Nothing could be further from the truth of scripture! We are called to live holy lives, lives dedicated to our master. We are to walk humbly with God, in faith and gratitude for God’s gracious gifts. The Freedom from Slavery To call ourselves “Christians,” followers of Christ, is to acknowledge that he is the “Master.” His thoughts, attitudes, and actions are ones we want to emulate. When you understand who Jesus was before his life as a human, you can easily see why the law of Moses played a vital role in Jesus’ teaching. Just as he saved Israel from Egyptian slavery, so we too have been saved. Saved to live in obedience to him. So, what was the value of the law of Moses from Jesus’ point of view? And do we value these teachings as our Master does?
