In 1917, Romania sent 93.4 tons of gold to its ally, Russia, for safekeeping, as the country faced invasion by the Central Powers. That treasure was never returned—and remains in Russia to this day.

When Hungarians and Saxons crossed the mountains from Transylvania, they didn’t adopt Cuman customs or Catholicism. Instead, they assimilated into the local Romanian culture—and embraced Orthodoxy.

"The Pitești Phenomenon" represented an experiment of reeducation that involved the psychological destruction of individuals. This "operation" began in 1949, at the Pitești prison. The Secret Police (Securitatea) devised a plan to eliminate the moral resistance of political prisoners, following the model of Anton Makarenko. The experiment ceased in the year 1952.
