Whether you already have rats or you’re just curious about them, there’s a lot people get wrong about rat care and what they’re actually like as pets. Pet rats are very social and intelligent animals. They recognize people, bond strongly, and have clear personalities. They’re not pets you just leave in a cage — they need interaction, enrichment, and companionship. Rats should never be kept alone. Even with human attention, they still need other rats. One of the most common questions is the difference between male and female rats. Male rats are usually calmer and more laid-back, but they are more messy. They scent mark more, pee more often, and aren’t as neat. Female rats are usually more active and curious. They move around more, climb more, and tend to be cleaner overall. Neither is better — it really depends on whether you want a calmer, messier rat or a more energetic one. Cleaning is a big part of rat care. Rats need regular cage cleaning, including removing wet bedding, cleaning litter areas, and picking up leftover food. They can actually be litter trained, which helps keep the cage cleaner and makes maintenance easier. Over time, rats usually choose one or two spots to go to the bathroom, which makes cleaning more predictable. Rats need a large wire cage with good airflow. Tanks aren’t recommended because they trap ammonia and moisture, which can cause respiratory issues. They also need enrichment like hammocks, hides, chew toys, and climbing space to stay mentally stimulated. A healthy rat diet should be based on a quality lab block or rat food. They should also get fresh foods, like vegetables and small amounts of fruit, along with treats in moderation. Too many rich foods or treats can cause digestive issues, so balance is important. Rats need daily interaction. Handling them gently and spending time with them helps them become confident and friendly. They’re very people-oriented animals once they trust you.
