Psalms In many books of Scripture, the opening passage gives the theme, or subject, of the book. We see this in Genesis. Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Josh 1:1-2 Now it came about after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ servant, saying, Prov 1:1-2 Now it came about after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ servant, saying, 2“Moses My servant is dead; now therefore arise, cross this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them, to the sons of Israel. Ecc 1:1-2 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. 2“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, “Vanity of vanities! All is vanity.” Matt 1:1-2 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2To Abraham was born Isaac; and to Isaac, Jacob; and to Jacob, Judah and his brothers; John 1:1-4 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. Rev 1:1-2 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His bond-servants, the things which must shortly take place; and He sent and communicated it by His angel to His bond-servant John, 2who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. The book of Psalms is the same way. It's main theme is given in the first phrase. Psa 1:1-2 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! 2But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.
