Atonement

Working from the foundation of the penal substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ (which is established here) we understand that the conscious suffering of Christ while in the body of his flesh on the cross and his death (Isa.53:5-6,8,10-12, Phil.2:8, 1Pt.2:24, 3:18, Gal.3:13, Rom.3:25,4:25, Mt.26:28, Heb.9:15-7,28,13:12, Col.1:19-22, Jn.19:30) made propitiation for us. (Rom.3:25, 1 Jn.2:2, 4:10) Thereby appeasing God’s justice and delivering us from his punishment for all our sins. God is exact or precise in his judgments- Ex. 21:23-5, Lev. 24:19-21, Lev. 19:34-6, Deut. 17:8, 19:21, 21:5, Deut. 25:14-16, Prov. 20:10,23, 11:1, 16:11, Micah 6:11. He demands righteousness Ezk.18:5, 45:9-10, Lv.19:36, Dt.25:15, Prv.11:1, 16:11, 17:15, So, our question here is how does annihilation propitiate God? God is not arbitrary in his justice (voluntarism error). If the penalty for sin is your eternal non-existence what exactly did Jesus do with regards to this? There must be a just weight & measure to fulfill all righteousness. Annihilationism creates a contradiction between the penalties of conscious suffering for sin and unconscious non-existence. Which is just and righteous? Is the penalty for sin both temporary conscious suffering and eternal unconscious non-existence? Temporal conscious existence in suffering and eternal unconscious non-existence without suffering are incompatible opposites, so how could both be equally just? If annihilation atonement occurred, then Jesus as a temporal man propitiated and not as an eternal person for, he could not have ceased existing as an eternal person. So, how is the eternality measure to be filled in God’s just weights and measures? In the death of people (death meaning the absence of life, the body without their spirit- Jam.2:26) is basically being disconnected from the physical realm. The bible uses the phrases "under the sun", "under heaven", in the "land of the living" or "on the earth" to indicate life while in the body. Hell is evidence that God's full retributive divine justice must be satisfied. Hell is not arbitrary justice. Hell is eternal because God is an eternal person. All our sins are against him. John 6:62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? The redemption is not separated from the person of Christ. He alone can be the mediator and advocate because of who he is. (1 Tim.2:5, Jn.17:3, 1 Jn.2:1-2) There could not be a third-party suffering for sin for the law and righteousness itself forbids it, yea it would be unjust. (Prv.17:15, Ezk.18:4,20, 2 Chr.25:4, Ex.32:32-3, Dt.24:16) Only the incarnate God could mediate and propitiate God. Unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. Heb.1:8-9

What else would the burnt sacrifice point to if not Jesus? (Heb 13:11-12) “The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.” (Lev.6:13) Because the law worketh wrath. (Rom.4:15) God’s wrath upon his just substitute instead of his enemies. (Nah.1:2, Rom.5:8-10, Eph.2:1-4) “But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the Lord shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.” (Psa.37:20) “I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with he goats.”(Jer.51:40) “Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the Lord hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger. From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them:” Lam.1:12-3 (see Isa.34:2,6-10, Lev.6:13, Jer.46:10) For the Lord thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God. (Dt.4:24, Ezk.38:19,6:5, Heb.12:29) This is a figure in the consuming of the sacrifice in Lev.9:24 “And there came a fire out from before the Lord, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat”. (2 Thes.1:7-9) The vengeance of eternal fire will fall from heaven upon the wicked. But Jesus Christ will be the one executing the wrath (Mt.3:11-12, Jn.5:22,27, Ac.17:31, Rv.5:5-6) because he absorbed this wrath on the cross. (Rom.14:9, Phil.2:6-11) Lev.1:3 If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the Lord. 4 And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him. Lev.6:8 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 9 Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the burnt offering: It is the burnt offering, because of the burning upon the altar all night unto the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be burning in it. 10 And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen breeches shall he put upon his flesh, and take up the ashes which the fire hath consumed with the burnt offering on the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar. 11 And he shall put off his garments, and put on other garments, and carry forth the ashes without the camp unto a clean place. 12 And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it; it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it; and he shall burn thereon the fat of the peace offerings.13 The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out. Leviticus 6:30 And no sin offering, whereof any of the blood is brought into the tabernacle of the congregation to reconcile withal in the holy place, shall be eaten: it shall be burnt in the fire. To understand redemption and ransom in scripture you must see that two different definitions are being used. Because Christ was fully eternal God incarnate his death can satisfy the eternal nature of God's righteousness. But Governmental Atonement Theorists (GOATs) 'The Atonement' by ALBERT BARNES (1858) attributes an arbitrary pardon to God of sinners without satisfying his justice, which is his immutable nature. The reason God hath set forth Jesus to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, is to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins. That he might be just in forgiving because it is a matter of justice. (Rom.3:25-6, 1 Jn.1:9) Barnes says in Ch.7 “It is impossible that this should have occurred unless the Divine nature actually suffered. If that were so, then it might be conceivable that an amount of suffering might have been endured in the time during which the Redeemer was on the cross which would be equal to all that those for whom he died would endure if in their own persons they bore the penalty of the law forever; for, if an infinite Being could thus suffer, the very fact that he is infinite would make such a supposition possible. But on no other supposition can it be conceived that, in the hours in which the Redeemer hung on the cross, or in the whole length of a human life, an amount of suffering could have been endured which would be equal to what countless millions could endure in the world of woe if prolonged to eternity.” Did not the Divine nature suffer in the incarnate Word in whom dwelt the fulness of the Godhead bodily, or that they had not "crucified the Lord of glory." Barnes explains “This doctrine cannot be believed.... the doctrine was found that God had endured mortal pangs. Such a statement would so impinge on all the conceptions which men entertain of the Divine nature, that it could not, and would not, be believed. God cannot suffer and die. If there is any thing of which the human mind is perfectly confident, it is of the truth of this statement; and if it were necessary that the Divine nature should suffer in order that an atonement should be made, it is clear that it would have been forever impossible. God cannot die; and yet, in all the representations which we have of the atonement, the statement is that it was made by the death of the victim.” (pg.225-6) If Christ is the express image of the Father in whom all fulness dwells, is he not fully God incarnate? (Col.2:9, 1:19, Heb.1:3) If the atonement was just a token suffering and not satisfying the full penalty of the law whereas the full penalty Barnes admits could be paid if in fact “an infinite Being could thus suffer”, is this not an admission that Christ who suffered was not fully God incarnate? For if in Christ dwelt the fulness of the Godhead bodily why would his sacrifice not have satisfied the eternal justice of God? This would be a denial of the Lord in the very act of buying them. 2 Pet.2:1 ...there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 1 Jn. 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist... The Living God is the source of all life. (Gen.1:21,24,28,2:7, Job 12:10, Mal.2:10, Ps.145:16, Heb.12:9, Ac.17:24-9, Lk.20:38) Therefore because of the unchanging immutability of God’s nature and character, the soul that sins shall surely die.
