Vivien Leigh (1913–1967) was a British actress who became a symbol of beauty, strength, and tragedy during the golden age of cinema. She was born in India, raised in England, and trained in acting in London. Worldwide fame came with her portrayal of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939), which earned her the first Academy Award, and her second came for Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). Her partner in both life and art was Laurence Olivier — not only her husband, but her creative ally, an actor and director with whom she created theatrical and cinematic masterpieces. Their union was filled with passion, artistry, and turbulent emotions. Yet behind the glitter of fame lay tragedy: Vivien suffered from bipolar disorder, an incurable illness at the time that eroded her mind and health. This was compounded by severe tuberculosis, which ultimately caused her untimely death at the age of 53. She remains remembered as a woman in whose eyes burned the light of genius — and a sorrow that not even time could heal.
