Hosea

Hosea 6 is a remarkable prophetic passage. It’s a passage many Christians are unaware of. This chapter gives us the key to understanding when Jesus will return a 2nd time. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m totally opposed to date setting the 2nd coming. As we come to this study in Hosea 5 we can learn from the mistakes of Israel. Years of immoral living had cemented them in their iniquity. Years of neglecting the word of YHWH, blinded them to their pending doom. Israel lived in the spirit of harlotry. Hosea personally knew the pain of this as he was married to a prostitute. The retribution of the Lord, would destroy Israel, for their wicked dwelling. Be sure you’re not dwelling in the spirit of harlotry.

Our Bible text for today - is Hosea 4. In this 4th chapter, the 1st of the Hebrew Minor writing prophets, he’ll focus on the importance of the Word of God. God’s people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. God gave Israel His word, & they ignored the Scriptures. We Christians today have the Bible, but so very few Christians - study the bible. Having not studied the Word, Christians are in danger of going the way of Israel. Don’t be a child of God who faces destruction, for lack of knowledge. Read & study the Word of God, grow in knowledge, & apply that knowledge in your life.

In Hosea 3, we’ll see the continued parallels between Gomer & Israel. Their costly ransom price paid, but “many days” of frostiness. Delivered from harlotry & idolatry, but not enjoying the blessings waiting for them. In Hosea 2 – we’ll discover the full meaning of the naming of Gomer’s 3 children. We’ll discover, the long-term plans of God, to bring Israel into a loving & pure relationship to Himself. We’ll hear of the millennial covenant, involving Israel & the animals of the earth. At a time just before the destruction of the northern kingdom of Israel. God promises hope in a future day of full restoration.

Hosea is the 1st - of 12 minor, or lesser, or shorter prophetic books. Hosea was likely from the northern kingdom of Israel, seeming to reference the king of Samaria as “our” king - in Hosea 7: 5. He wrote this prophecy in the 8th century BC, I can’t get more specific with the date. He prophesied to both the northern & southern kingdoms. But his primary focus was the north. Hosea means - salvation or deliverance. It’s a variation of the name Joshua (or Jesus). Hosea, Amos, Isaiah & Micah – all prophesied around the same general time. The 1st 3 chapters are personal narrative, telling of Hosea’s life. The rest of the book consists of heavenly announcements (or oracles).
