PokeWilds: episode 1, a new island
Desperado plays monster tamer gamesPokeWilds is a freeware fangame that's not an official Pokémon product. Pokewilds doesn't have a progression path and is instead a sandbox game. This is version 0.8.11 with mods including a huge Pokémon revamp mod that I created and first shared a year ago (March 29 2024). Future videos of me playing PokeWilds will be edited down to only the important moments. That will also be how I show Pokémon fangame playthroughs since there tends to be a lot of grinding and walking back and forth. The team that makes this fangame has been working on remaking the entire game in another engine. There's no ETA and it's been a work in progress for a while, so now is the perfect time to make an unnecessary and long showcase of what this fangame is. If you're interested in playing this game yourself, go to the Discord channel and don't complain about when the update is coming.3 views -
PokeWilds: episode 2, some resource farms
Desperado plays monster tamer gamesPokeWilds is a freeware fangame that's not an official Pokémon product. This disclaimer is going to be on every Pokémon fangame video I make. Most resources in the PokeWilds world don't respawn, but one of the few exceptions are the buried items such as fossils in the desert or evolution stones in every biome. Use an electric-type on the computer in the abandoned research lab in the desert biome, use the fossil of your choice, and spawn the fossil Pokémon you want. If you have a high enough level fairy-type in your party, use the charm field move on that fossil Pokémon to pick it up without needing to battle. Ashen soil is the easiest ground tile to farm. Have a tile of lava, a tile of water, and dig up the tile in between the two. The result is a tile of ashen soil that you can get encounters from the volcano biome if you walk on top of it. Standing on it covers your screen in smoke, but ashen soil is useful for planting berry seeds on top of to create lum berry trees. Each biome's ground tile has a different berry tree that grows on it but lum berry is the best because it cures all status effects instead of only one. Farm some ashen soil and bring it home to your base to set up a berry farm that's easy to access.1 view -
PokeWilds: episode 3, base building
Desperado plays monster tamer gamesPokeWilds is a freeware fangame that's not an official Pokémon product. Don't complain about the update taking too long in the Discord channel. I don't know if anyone else does this, but one of my base building strategies is to make walls of fence doors around my base to keep out wandering Pokémon in the overworld. Sometimes an overworld Pokémon from outside my base might aggro me and I run back into the safety of my base, but if there's no wall of gates, that aggro Pokémon could camp outside my house and attack repeatedly. That's how my very first playthrough of this game started. Teleport beacons are very important for setting up fast travel locations at important locations throughout the island: the research lab for restoring fossils, graveyards for digging up dusk stones, the volcano for farming ashen soil, next to every base I build, and any other landmarks that might be out there.4 views -
PokeWilds: episode 4, evolution
Desperado plays monster tamer gamesPokeWilds is a freeware fangame that's not an official Pokémon product. I'm playing with mods. This fangame is alright without mods, but very few of the Pokémon in the base version have good move pools. Pokémon have field moves based on type and in some cases species. All fighting-types can use the field move "build" which constructs objects in the world. All ground-types can use the field move "dig" which excavates a ground tile and can place down a ground tile if there's a hole in the ground. Not all flying-types can use the field move "fly" to lift above the ground and travel around more easily. All grass-types and some other Pokémon can use the field move "cut" to cut down trees, grass, and buildings such as your own fences or objects already present in the world. Team building in a Pokémon fangame is always important, but in PokeWilds there's two questions: are you carrying the field moves you need, and are you carrying Pokémon that you like? You can go home and switch out what's in your party, but if you're only carrying Pokémon as HM slaves or field move slaves then you won't have as much interest or attachment to them. There's no gyms or champion to worry about on a deserted island, so use what you want.10 views -
PokeWilds: episode 5, farming
Desperado plays monster tamer gamesPokeWilds is a freeware fangame that's not an official Pokémon product. This is more of a very low difficulty survival game than a Pokémon fangame. The Pokémon are more of a decoration that populates the world while the real game is exploration and building things. Logs and grass are the two main materials for constructing most buildable objects. Logs are obtained from using the field move cut on trees, but not all trees give the same amount. Trees grown on snow tiles yield two logs and either two or three apricorns. Each apricorn can be crafted into one specialized Pokéball, which is a lot less costly to fabricate than the typical Pokéball series along with Great and Ultra which each use at least two materials that are more tedious to obtian. All you have to do is get some "nevermeltice" from happy ice-type Pokémon or dig it up in the snow biome up the mountain and plant apricorn as seeds on those tiles. Grass tiles are the same item as the resource obtained if you use field move cut on tall grass, the kind that has encounters if you walk in it. The best way to obtain the item grass (which are ground tiles) is to plant miracle seeds on the savanna biome's ground tiles which yields four units per single tile of tall grass cut down. Miracle seeds are obtained from happy grass-type Pokémon. Grass-type Pokémon are happy if they're standing near tall grass, the kind you can encounter wild Pokémon if you walk on it. This is why I like to build my starting base near a savanna. You could cut down a bunch of the tall grass to make room and start, but that's a good amount of clearing you'd be sitting on top of instead of using that precious land for setting up tall grass farms.4 views -
PokeWilds: episode 6, team building
Desperado plays monster tamer gamesPokeWilds is a freeware fangame that's not an official Pokémon product. There's no clear objective so don't expect the quality of a fully developed RPG in this very light sandbox game. Use the apricorn balls to capture overworld encounters that are already high level. Is it worth using them? They're already high level and the only individual changes you can have with Pokémon of the same species and evolution is the moveset since there are no IV's or EV's in this fangame, but it feels a lot different to capture something low level and train it up compared to picking up something that's already high level. Thanks to the way this fangame works, move sets of random and overworld encounters aren't accurate based on species and level. The learnset mod greatly improves what's learned while leveling up but if you catch something that's already high level you'll need to grind a lot to learn the moves that are supposed to already be known by that level. After establishing safe zones and resource farms, and after having the field moves needed to make travel and management easy, now is the point where I like to start adjusting my party by replacing some Pokémon. In this episode I'm only replacing Pinsir as my dedicated cutter, but thanks to the limited move list in this fangame the only physical bug moves that exist are ones with 85 accuracy or if I turn off the physical/special split. Don't worry about the Pokémon that get replaced in your party here on this island, they can live a peaceful retirement at the main base.1 view -
PokeWilds: ep7, multiple bases
Desperado plays monster tamer gamesPokeWilds is a freeware fangame that's not an official Pokémon product. Which island size is ideal? I don't know, but the highest size usually puts most of that size into the big empty desert and the rugged-terrain mountain. I think the smallest two island sizes might lack certain important biomes of landmarks. Setting up multiple bases can be useful for a change of scenery, as much as you'd like to see me collect resources at Start (my initial base) on loop. There's also easier access to other biomes where certain items respawn. -
PokeWilds: episode 8, what's in the mansion
Desperado plays monster tamer gamesPokeWilds is a freeware fangame that's not an official Pokémon product. There's no power points (PP) in this fangame, but hopefully nothing funny happens when moves can be used infinite times. The mansion is one of a few dungeons available in PokeWilds that has a unique encounter table. There's mostly fire and poison types in there, so be sure to bring in a ground-type or something that can handle it. If you have a poison-type in your party, use the repel field move to have the effect of the repel item which reduces the encounter rate as long as the potential encounter is lower level than the Pokémon you're using the repel field move with. Why does Porygon only know the move Sketch? That's caused by how this fangame generates Pokémon move sets. The species enabled to be available in this fangame through modding are obtainable because they're set up to evolve from Pokémon that are normally available in this fangame without modding, but that means if you encounter those mod-enabled Pokémon their movesets will be based on what they're set up to evolve from. Porygon, Magnemite, and Voltorb are available through modding because I set them up as evolutions from Ditto. The move Transform doesn't exist in PokeWilds but sketch does, so I gave Ditto the move Sketch many times by level-up. Since Ditto is set up as the pre-evolution for Porygon, an encountered Porygon has the moveset of what it's evolved from, and Sketch can't exist in multiple move slots at the same time, so the result is Porygon only has one move slot occupied with Sketch which gets replaced with the first move it sees someone else use. After you capture one of these Pokémon, feel free to modify your save data to lower the level so that you can earn experience and prompts to learn moves by level-up. If you don't know how to do that and are using this particular mod, I recommend visiting the Discord community for this fangame and either using the search tool or ask in the chat. There are some changes in my revamp mod as shown in this series that aren't the same as the currently available version 3 of my mod. I've tweaked it a bit over time on my own end but haven't bothered sharing the up to date version.1 view -
PokeWilds: episode 9, convenience
Desperado plays monster tamer gamesPokeWilds is a freeware fangame that's not an official Pokémon product. When is the update? Eventually, probably, maybe. I don't expect it to ever be done so I'm enjoying what we have so far. Encounters in dungeons and from fishing are always about level 30 regardless of your party. Grass encounters and restored fossils scale in level based on your party. Evolved forms typically give about double or triple the experience of unevolved forms, so if you're trying to grind for experience versus difficulty of the battle keep that in mind. Switch leeching is a pretty good way to grind if you have something low or de-leveled by editing your save, which is what I did with the Porygon that kept putting my Hypno to sleep. Graveyards are one of the few resource locations that I can't pick up and move to my main base, Start. Dusk stones are valuable for crafting beacons and evolving certain Pokémon.5 views 1 comment -
PokeWilds: episode 10, rare candy farm
Desperado plays monster tamer gamesPokeWilds is a freeware fangame that's not an official Pokémon product. What if Pokémon made an official game similar to PokeWilds? Using a rare candy farm can quickly lead to leveling up your team all the way to 100 but that takes a lot of challenge out of the game. Switch-leeching is better for grinding something up that's very low level while rare candy is better if I want to level up something that's just a few levels too low to win battles alone. I make the "circle" pens for resource farms that need an object that obstructs movement. Some types only need a certain ground tile, such as grass (encounter) for grass-types and sand for ground-types. Rock-types need a statue or a natural rock which obstruct one tile. Unown being mono-psychic type only need a basic ground tile such as grass, but I figure I may as well have them in a similar pen since crafting one rare candy needs three berry juice from Shuckle and one ancient powder. Unown could be penned similar to the row/column setup.10 views 2 comments
