In a world of competing interests, values, and visions how can we restore family unity? Christ spoke to the situation in his time and the tensions within the community and families due to sectarian discord. He concluded that a house divided would not be able to stand, and history bears witness to the resultant disaster for the Jewish community. In our day the situation is equally divisive, and unless we take active steps to counter the effects of the spirit of our time we too will not experience the peace in our families that God intended. The scriptures, though written millennia ago, offer us solid advice on how to face life's challenges. Consider the wisdom that Paul offered Titus on the roles of men and women in marriage — advice that has stood the test of time. Or delve into Luke's story of Jesus and what it means to be 'submissive' in our relationships. Our world has largely forsaken the sound counsel that Paul gave to the Ephesians about husbands and wives willingly assuming and fulfilling their God-ordained roles in the family in accordance with God's plan. But we can take up this challenge! We can mindfully put off our carnal nature and put on the mind of God so we can grow in spiritual maturity and do the good work God wants us to do in our families. Marriage is a complex and profound relationship. So it is no wonder that God speaks through his Word to give us insight into this most meaningful of relationships. So how are we doing in our marriage? Or if you are hoping to marry, what type of person do you need to become? The apostles Peter and Paul provide a good checklist of characteristics that would help us in this important task of self-reflection. God is working in us to achieve his purpose, so are we putting in the effort we need to in our families to actively walk together with Christ? Wise parents know that as children mature they should be given responsibilities in the family to help them feel a part of the family enterprise. By having family goals and a sense of purpose that incorporates a family’s children in the purpose of achieving those goals, a child’s feeling of belonging to the family increases and that his or her life has meaning and that his or her efforts are valued. Even mere employees of a corporate enterprise work best and most faithfully when their loyalty and hard work is appreciated by their employer who values their contributions and who shows appreciation for the efforts of their employees. As family members or merely as employees whenever we are given new responsibilities and our efforts are rewarded with appropriate respect and praise—we feel significant! And this feeling of significance motivates us to accept our given tasks and to seek ever greater service roles, so that we can contribute more to accomplishing the mission of our family or our work place. But such a building of a family or a business takes insight and proactive action to encourage everyone to do their best in their service. We know this sound, proven practice to be a physical reality, but it is also a spiritual reality. As members of the Creator God’s family, we have a mission. And our God is developing his ‘koinonia’—His fellowship—to help Him fulfill His mission. Children of God - Imitating the Father How do children learn? In early life patterns of thought and behaviour are learned through imitation. Children learn to sound and act like those who care for them. Spiritually speaking we are to follow this same pattern of development by imitating Christ — doing what he did. His life was an example, a model for us to admire and emulate. As our Messiah, Jesus came to honour his Father by serving his brethren and teaching as he had been taught. He came to model the attitudes and actions that would lead to abundant life. Sometimes his example was in direct contradiction to the attitudes of his era. Jesus’ approach to children, Gentiles, and the law of God was radically different from the normative societal practices. As children of God we are part of a family with God as our Father and many brothers and sisters. To maintain strong family ties and build close relationships, Jesus provided us the key. He instructed his disciples, his followers, to love others in the same way that he had loved them. This is a tall order! And yet it is vital to maintaining the bonds that bind families and church brethren together. So how do we love one another? And what is love, agape, as defined by the God whose defining characteristic is love? Jesus’ parable of the servants who owed a debt gives us insight into one of love’s chief characteristics. James' metaphor about the tongue and how we speak to and about others highlights another aspect of love. Paul’s instructions to the Romans provides us with a broad summary of God’s application of the qualities of love. The daily news provides abundant examples of people failing to care for those for whom they are responsible. Recently the world witnessed the dramatic failure of the designer of the Titan submersible to put the safety of his crew ahead of his personal ambition. But that is just one of many examples where leaders, politicians, teachers, parents or others in positions of responsibility have failed to care for their people. At the very beginning of the story of humanity, God answers the question of, "Am I my brother's keeper?' with a resounding 'YES!" In fact the prophets continue this message with warnings couched in metaphor to the 'shepherds' who fail to care for their flock. Often God uses the lives of his people as object lessons to teach this important principle. The story of Jacob's sons who sell their pesky younger brother into slavery in Egypt is one such tale. In spite of jealousy, betrayal, and heartache, in the end the brothers learn that their sins will find them out. But they also learn the importance of being their brothers' keeper. Our challenge as God's people is to have his mind and heart and express to others the kind of love that reflects God's nature. We need to ask ourselves if we are being diligent in choosing what God prefers and then taking action for the benefit of those in our care.
