Poland is set to dispatch four Mig fighter jets of Soviet-era vintage to Ukraine, marking the first instance of a Nato country sending planes to the conflict zone since Russia’s invasion last year. According to Polish President Andrzej Duda, the fighter jets will be dispatched in the next few days, while additional planes will be delivered in the future, BBC reported. While the additional fighter jets are a welcomed addition to Ukraine’s air defense, they are not anticipated to be a decisive factor in the ongoing conflict. NATO chief says Poland blast likely caused by Ukrainian missile — but not Ukraine’s fault NATO said there was no indication that the missile strike that hit a Polish border village on Tuesday night was deliberate, saying that Russia was ultimately to blame as it continues to bombard Ukraine with missiles. Polish firefighters have recovered 100 tonnes of dead fish from the Oder river running through Germany and Poland, deepening concerns of an environmental disaster for which no cause has yet been identified. “We’d never had an operation of this scope on a river before,” said Monika Nowakowska-Drynda from the national firefighter press office on Tuesday. She confirmed that around 100 tonnes (220,500lb) of dead fish had been recovered since Friday. More than 500 firefighters have been recovering the dead fish in Poland with the help of dams, boats, quad bikes and even a drone. German municipalities banned bathing and fishing in the Oder after thousands of dead fish were found floating in the 520 mile (840km) river, which runs from the Czech Republic to the Baltic Sea along the border between Germany and Poland. Conservationists expressed fears that the mass die-off could wreak havoc on the entire ecosystem of the Oder. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski warned Russia on Monday at an emergency U.N. Polish police have arrested a Ukrainian national, identified as diver Volodymyr Z, on suspicion of involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions. A former Warsaw city council employee, identified as Tomasz L., was charged with espionage for allegedly providing Russia with false identities for its spies. Authorities say he copied civil registry records from 2017 to 2022 while working in the archives of births, marriages, and deaths. Archaeologists in Poland have uncovered a 1,000-year-old cemetery containing human skeletons near the remains of a fortified medieval settlement in the village of Borkowo. The graves date to the era of Poland’s conversion from paganism to Christianity, and researchers describe the individuals as among the region’s “first Christians.” Despite their faith transition, the deceased were buried with grave goods such as arrowheads, a battle ax, knives, rings, and carnelian beads — a pagan custom.
