It is possible for water to function as the computer RAM memory storing in its “brain” every interaction that occurs in its immediate environment? Leonardo Da Vinci said: “Water is the driving force of nature“. Indeed, there can be no life without water. But what are the secrets hidden in this amazing part of nature? How did it emerge on Earth? Questions that perhaps only the water itself could answer… Water is what unites all mankind and life in general. Our body consists of 60% to 70% water. The planet’s surface is mostly covered by water. The amazing water Scientists have concluded that some properties of water are unique and can not be explained entirely by the laws of physics. For example, water is the only chemical compound that can exist in three forms: liquid, solid, and gaseous – at the temperatures that our planet naturally has. Does water have memory? The unpredictable behavior of water concerned scientists in the 1950s and 1960s. Unable to explain a series of unpleasant incidents such as deaths of scientists and intelligence agents after drinking water, they resulted in a conclusion that initially seemed incredible: What if water has memory? What if by some unexplained mechanism, it manages to “save” information, much like a computer? In the next years, a series of experiments in various countries of the world have shown that water “recorded” and “saved” any outside influence. According to the study author Jacques Benveniste and his team of researchers, it “remembered” anything that happened in its surrounding environment, and anything that came in contact with water left a “mark” in it. However, the scientific community didn’t accept these results as valid and regarded Benveniste’s experiments as a way to promote the effectiveness of homeopathy. Masaru Emoto’s experiments with water Masaru Emoto’s experiments suggest that water doesn’t just have memory, but its structure could be affected by the emotions of people. According to Emoto, water molecules change their position when they interact with positive or negative emotions. With the help of a technologically advanced tool Magnetic Resonance Analyzer, the researcher studied the crystalline form of water and made photos of the changes brought to it from the various environmental and human influences. What are the musical tastes of water? How does it react when it is talked to with love? How does it respond to thoughts and intentions? How much does water suffer from environmental pollution? According to Emoto’s, the results of his experiments suggest that different kinds of music and people’s thoughts, feelings, and words directly affect the crystal structure of water, which seems to react like a living entity. Emoto put labels on bottles of water with expressions of human emotions and ideas. Some of them were positive, for example, “thank you” and “love”. Others were negative, as the label “You make me sick, I will kill you.” He claims that the water reacted to these expressions. According to him, the water with positive messages made beautiful crystals and that with negative messages – ugly and deformed crystals. Are the results of Emoto’s experiments valid? The above images and Emoto’s claims provoked an international reaction in the scientific community and beyond it, which led to the fact that his research was taken seriously by some scientists and was heavily criticized by some others. As such, Dr. William Reville, a professor of biochemistry at University College Cork in Ireland, believes that there is little evidence behind Emoro’s claims. First of all, the results of the research were never peer-reviewed but were only published in an alternative science journal. Secondly, other studies, aimed to confirm Emoto’s results, failed to show a similar effect on water crystals. According to Dr. Reville, Emoto’s research lacks valid scientific methods and sufficient experimental controls since the formation of water crystals can be influenced by many factors. It means that the results of Emoto’s experiments are very subjective and could be easily manipulated and are prone to human error. “It is very unlikely that there is any reality behind Emoto’s claims. I have no reason to doubt Emoto’s sincerity, but his work bears many hallmarks of a pseudoscience”, said Dr. Reville. Are you convinced? As you can see, the scientific community has found faults in both Benveniste’s and Emoto’s experiments rejecting them as valid, even though both scientists made bold claims, giving us some food for thought. The term translated “firmament” (Hebrew raqia) refers to an expanse or sky, something stretched out, and is often translated as “expanse” or “vault” in modern Bible versions. According to Genesis 1:8, “God called the firmament Heaven” (NKJV), indicating that it refers to the sky or the heavens above the earth. The waters “under the firmament” are easy to understand. These refer to the waters on the earth—oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, and subterranean water sources. These are the waters that we see and interact with on the earth’s surface. Later, in Genesis 1:9–10, God gathers these waters into one place, allowing dry land to appear, which He calls Earth and Seas. This shows that the waters under the firmament are the terrestrial waters that are part of the earth’s physical geography. The waters “above the firmament” have been the subject of more debate. One interpretation is that these waters refer to a vapor canopy or a layer of water that once surrounded the earth’s atmosphere. This idea suggests that, before the global flood described in Genesis 6—9, the earth may have been enveloped in a protective layer of water vapor, which could have contributed to a greenhouse-like environment. This canopy theory is speculative but has been proposed by some creation scientists to help explain the long lifespans before the flood and the global deluge itself (Genesis 7:11–12). Another interpretation is that the waters “above” are simply the clouds and atmospheric moisture. This view aligns with our current understanding of the water cycle, where water exists in the atmosphere in the form of vapor and clouds. Psalm 148:4 supports this idea: “Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!” (ESV). This poetic language suggests that even the atmospheric waters are part of God’s creation and under His command. Regardless of the specific nature of the waters “above,” the key theological point is that God is sovereign over all creation. He brought order by separating and assigning boundaries to the elements of the universe. Psalm 19:1 declares, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork” (ESV). The firmament, or sky, is a visible testimony to God’s creative power and design. In summary, the “waters under the firmament” are the earthly bodies of water, while the “waters above the firmament” could refer either to a now-absent water canopy or to the atmospheric waters such as clouds. Water, in whatever place it is found, is part of God’s ordered creation, demonstrating His authority and wisdom in forming a world that sustains life and reflects His glory. Water is Life – Water Holds Memory... Yes Exodus 14:13-31 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lord pushed the sea back by a strong east wind all night, turning the sea into dry land. The waters were split into two. The Israelites walked into the sea on dry ground. The waters formed a wall for them on their right hand and on their left. The Egyptians chased them and went into the sea after them, all of Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and cavalry. As morning approached, the Lord looked down on the Egyptian camp from the column of lightning and cloud and threw the Egyptian camp into a panic.The Lord jammed their chariot wheels so that they wouldn’t turn easily. The Egyptians said, “Let’s get away from the Israelites, because the Lord is fighting for them against Egypt!” Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the water comes back and covers the Egyptians, their chariots, and their cavalry.” So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. At daybreak, the sea returned to its normal depth. The Egyptians were driving toward it, and the Lord tossed the Egyptians into the sea. The waters returned and covered the chariots and the cavalry, Pharaoh’s entire army that had followed them into the sea. Not one of them remained. The Israelites, however, walked on dry ground through the sea. The waters formed a wall for them on their right hand and on their left. The Lord rescued Israel from the Egyptians that day. Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. Israel saw the amazing power of the Lord against the Egyptians. The people were in awe of the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses. From water in a drop of dew—arriving gently in the waking dawn of the day in the tiniest of miracles. To Water—symbolizing the wild, the untamable, the mysteries of the deep. From the Chattahoochee watershed fought for in water wars for generations to the Sweetwater Creek on the southside where the remnants of factories burnt in the Civil War still stand. Water is our history. Water is the reason the Muscogee people, descendants of the predominant Mississippian peoples, were named “Creek,” by the colonizers. They settled and built mounds and small pyramid structures next to flowing water. Water. Is. Life. Water—bespeaking the spirit of God pouring from the fountain of earth. Water—embodying the very building block of evolution. We, each of us, becomes and grows in water. When we are born, on average the bodies of babies are made up of 78% water. Water is Life. Pablo Neruda wrote in his Sonnet 34 an ode to the waters of one’s life: You are the daughter of the sea, oregano’s first cousin Swimmer, your body is pure as the water; Everything you do is full of flowers, rich with the earth Your eyes go out toward the water, and the waves rise; Your hands go out to the earth and the seeds swell; you know the deep essence of water and the earth, conjoined in you like a formula for clay Water is life. The voices of indigenous water protectors ring out still from the Lakota and the Sioux, indigenous and native-allies. Mni Winconi -Water is life. Water is life- we say this honoring the watershed, the Chattahoochee; we say water is life speaking out loud the history of these words and placing it also in our biblical tradition as well. Water commanded by Jesus. Walked upon and then calmed by our Black messiah. Water that welcomed and baptized John, Jesus and the Ethiopian. All of whom God called Good. Water was in the beginning. God spoke over the water. Life emerged from the water. Water IS life. Theories of the origins of freshwater on earth are fascinating. Scientists used to believe predominantly that freshwater must have originated on the earth from asteroid impacts in the solar system. SPACE WATER!!! I love that! Especially in light of water’s preternatural ability to measure impact. Water itself coming from collision and explosion is fascinating. It is now the pervasive theory that hydrogen and oxygen present in the gaseous formation of planet earth are what make up the underground fresh water system. Water formed from the cosmos. Water is life. Particularly for desert cultures in a place from which essential diatoms in the cycle of how life evolved. For the fleeing Israelites pinned between the bellicose army of the hard-hearted Pharoah and the water of the sea of reeds, water was a natural barrier. For every desert culture water represented life—YES—water was wild and unpredictable, but water, referenced 722 times in the Bible, was a GIFT from God—NOT THIS TIME. In this case of military maneuvering and the cat and mouse game playing out between enslaved people and their oppressors—this water had them trapped. They were pinned in. There was nowhere to go. But God made a way. The Lord pushed the sea back by a strong east wind all night, turning the sea into dry land. The waters were split into two. The Israelites walked into the sea on dry ground. The waters formed a wall for them on their right hand and on their left. “Do not be afraid, stand firm, and see the deliverance that the Lord will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you see today you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to keep still.” In the middle of the desert wilderness, a generation of enslaved people who were probably terrified heard these words. Feeling trapped and pinned down; families and children; I must keep walking; try not to cry; our bodies need all the water we have. The impending wave of cavalry; hooves pounding; could they hear it? Could they see the earth moving? The Egyptians charge forward toward the retreating Israelites, as those faithful words escape the mouth of God’s chosen—Moses. “Do not be afraid.” Water is Life. And the Lord said unto Moses, “Why do you cry out to me? Tell the Israelites to go forward. But lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the Israelites may go into the sea on dry ground.” The description in this scripture is repetitive; the water formed a wall to the Israelites right and to their left. The wall of water is exactly HOW the sea parts. The water formed walls on both the right and the left of the fleeing people. This must have sounded so unimaginable to early listeners of this story. Walls of Water—Walls of wildness—Walls of salvation in a dry world; Walls of the stuff of LIFE—held back by the One true God. WATER is LIFE. Yet—this image might have lost its earth-shattering significance. You or I might just picture walking through the aquarium. Water conveniently held in place by giant tanks on either side; the blue reflective water showing us the secrets of the deep while we walk on dry ground. When trying to describe this passage to [my child] Luis, who hasn’t yet been to the aquarium—I found myself making the comparison to the movie MOANA—one of our most favorite movies; you remember the part—when the Ocean is calling to a young Moana; beckoning her toward her destiny; even though she is yet a toddler; The ocean offers shells to entice the curious little Moana to walk into the parting water toward the heart of Tahiti ; the journey of her life; that would bring her around the world and you see the walls of water around her. In the water she would find herself and redefine her people’s history. The walls of water have captivated imaginations throughout time. The Israelites walked on dry land through the water, which was all around them on their left and on their right. There have been countless writings on the symbolism of this phrasing. These writings of biblical imagination are an amazing and rich tradition that is the foundation of the rabbinic Judaism, the modern tradition. Modern Judaism is very different today, but the words of the ancient rabbis come from the oral tradition that was, at least in part, preserved through the work of the Pharisees. I make this distinction to honor this tradition and make a point about antisemitism or ANY ONE group who is wholly denigrated or written off. These beautiful lessons come from the work of the Pharisees. One of these beautiful imaginings about this part of the Exodus story has stuck with me for over 5 years. I first heard of this Rabbinic writing when I led a group painting a mural at the Congregation Bet Haverim during the Passover season. With this group we wove our stories together through images and paint in a process of communal remembering, recognition and creativity. I never forgot the teaching that day from the Mishnah that Rabbi Josh Lesser offered. The rabbis wrote that when the Israelites looked into the walls of water on their left and on their right they could see all of their ancestors; they could see all of their people that ever have been. As they walked toward their freedom, leaning into the strong hands of their redeeming God, they looked into the walls of water staring down their past and even into their future, for the Rabbis wrote that it wasn’t just their foreparents that were presented in the walls of water, it was all the generations to come. On this past Sunday in the Christian tradition we celebrated All Saints Day. And I think it’s important on this Sunday in particular that we hear a message of recognizing our ancestors. We too can see our foreparents and be reminded of the impact of our lives through water. Yes we will light candles as is tradition, and on this Sunday we can use water in an even more ancient tradition to remember the generations past. The Israelites saw their whole lives. Their families, lost in the brutal life of enslavement; their foreparents who came to the land of Egypt and thrived and even their children and grandchildren to come surviving and persevering through times of insecurity and turmoil. They say it all in the wall of water. Water is life. Water, this reflective surface; light bouncing off dancing water, still today, might show us our whole lives. Water has memory. Water holds the ripples of impact. Water is impacted by our actions. In the book The Hidden Messages in Water Masaro Emoto wrote about water’s replicating and responsive properties, a conclusion he demonstrates through observing water crystals. He spent years photographing these microscopic individual snowflake-like shapes that ice forms right before melting. According to this research, water that was infused with positivity and love responded in the production of authentic symmetrical crystals. Water that was exposed to negativity either could not form crystals or produced half formed shapes. If water is life because of the positivity and energy in this flowing living water, then water too can and is impacted by pollution and negativity, even more than we know. Water is scarce in many places and in others it has been contaminated and infused with negativity. Here in Georgia the Savannah River site and Plant Vogel have degraded the quality of the Savannah River. Reports cite that the river is 70% polluted. Not sure if one can measure the impact of this pollution in numbers alone. This flowing water, from which no crystals could form, people depend on in the watershed. Water is life, but we must treat it as the life-giving force that it is. If we look deeply into the wall of water, will we see for the first time why water is so important in our identities. If we look genuinely into the water, we too can remember our ancestors. We can recognize ourselves as the ripples of their impact, and we are building the future with the next generation. On this All Saints Sunday we would like to honor our ancestors. We build from what they did and left us. And just as Water mirrors and reflects vibrations in sound and frequency. Water can help us remember who we are as well. I’m reminded of that part in the Lion King (yes another reference to Disney’s works!)—but you remember that part. The Lion King is classic; It’s when Rafiki has found Simba in the far away woods living his life with no worries. Rafiki tells Simba that his father Mufasa is still there. Unbelieving but desperate to connect, Simba follows Rafiki through a dark and twisted wood until he emerges over the water and looks at the surface. “Look again” cackles Rafiki and suddenly Mufasa manifests from the water all the way to the clouds (another form of water) to remind Simba of who he is. Water is life. Water can speak life to us. Water is so powerful and wild. Water is precious and important. The story of the Israelites might once have been the lesson of God’s chosen people, but I’ve also heard it said that God wept for the lost Egyptians as well. Water is Life, and it can be our death if we forget ourselves or forget the unrestrained capability of the large seas. As the Genesis story recounts, God spoke over the swirling water, so water existed alongside the authenticator of life. Water is life. Jesus offered living water at the well; this offer is for all. Jesus, who tamed the wild waters, and walked, and spoke over and washed in the waters. Jesus whose very body began at 78% water, like us all. Water is in us all. Water is life, and our lives are infused and enriched. So let us connect again with our essential element. Let us connect again with ourselves, as Neruda reminds us, “You are the daughter [or son, or sibling or progeny] of the sea…Your body is pure as the water.” You have no need to cleanse yourself, just be as the water you are from within, adaptable, impressionable, seeking balance and being and reflecting what is around you. It is within us all. We can remember our ancestors this morning. We have placed our photos on the altar, next to bowls of positively infused water. Let’s practice active remembering this morning. There are stations around the sanctuary to utilize water to actively remember; touch the water and remember your baptism, look into the water and see your foreparents reflected; remember your ancestors, let the water transport you. Water Has Memory Struggling to process the overwhelming transformations of his life, Olaf the magic snowman of Frozen 2, resorts to mindless recitation of strange facts of science and myth that he picked up from god knows where. If you’ve watched Frozen 2 more times than you care to count, the aphorisms appear in your consciousness at odd moments of life no different than ancient rabbinic teachings. “Did you know that turtles can breathe through their butts?” If you take the time to google his quotes you learn strange things. Some turtles actually do breathe through their butts, in winter hibernation cloacal respiration is their main form of oxygen. More essential to the plot of the story though is this one – Olaf says, “Water has Memory.” In 1988, a French biologist specializing in immunology named Jacques Benveniste, published a paper in Nature demonstrating that water can retain memories of compounds even when diluted at a very high level. Homeopathists were thrilled by the validation, other scientists not so much. His experiment was not quite replicable, and the brouhaha has taken many turns. Nonetheless, in Frozen 2, Elsa is retracing the histories of an unresolved past that continues to call to her. At each of the reverberant places of her journey, she communes with the local waters that remember everything they once witnessed: the death of her parents, her grandfathers’ murder and deceit of the indigenous people of the land, her mother’s act of love that bridged worlds. With her magic and the capacities of water, she transmutes the lost images of the past into living ice sculptures for everyone to see. Water has memory. The pop culture equivalent of Frozen amongst the demographic of naturalist literature enthusiasts is Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass. Ten thousand people have asked if I’ve read it and until this summer I answered no. Staying at my friend Abby Paloma’s house as we transitioned to life upstate, it was living on her dining table like a bible and I couldn’t help myself, I got fifty pages into her copy and then bought my own so I could underline and fold down corners, the last book of a long summer reading list. I think the book has been devoured by the moment because of its rare vantage that brings worlds together. Kimmerere is a member of Potowatomi Nation and a professor of environmental biology, and the book weaves these two ways of knowing together, indigineous plant wisdom and natural science. There is an attitude in the culture now that says you’re not allowed to speak of anything outside your lane. But what we’re really yearning for is people who bring worlds together in strange unexpected ways, old forms crumbling, new ways of knowing emergent. In a divisive time the hunger for communion is ravenous. She’s telling the story of trying to learn the language of her ancestors. The living speakers of potawatomi are few, and they are old. Where European languages often assign gender, Potowatomi does not. But it does distinguish animate from inanimate forms, living from nonliving things, and the living are addressed with entirely different language. But who decides what is living? Are the moths that I sucked up into my vacuum cleaner living? The mice in my mouse traps? Snakes, trees, grass, rocks, carrots, clouds, wind, strawberries, tobacco, sweetgrass, water? The subtleties of a culture’s language reveals its considerations. “Pages blurred and my eyes settled on a word – a verb, of course: ‘to be a Saturday.’ Pfft! I threw down the book. Since when is Saturday a verb? Everyone knows it’s a noun. I grabbed the dictionary and flipped more pages and all kinds of things seemed to be verbs: ‘to be a hill,’ ‘to be red,’ ‘to be a long sandy stretch of beach,’ and then my finger rested on wiikwegamaa: ‘to be a bay.’ ‘Ridiculous!’ … And then I swear I heard the zap of synapses firing … In that moment I could smell the water of the bay, watch it rock against the shore and hear it sift onto the sand. A bay is a noun only if water is dead. When bay is a noun, it is defined by humans, trapped between its shores and contained by the word. But the verb wiikwegamaa – to be a bay – releases the water from bondage and lets it live. ‘To be a bay’ holds the wonder that, for this moment, the living water has decided to shelter itself between these shores, conversing with cedar roots and a flock of baby mergansers. Because it could do otherwise – become a stream or an ocean or a waterfall, and there are verbs for that, too … Water, land, and even a day, the language a mirror for seeing the animacy of the world, the life that pulses through all things … this is the grammar of animacy” (Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass, pg. 55). Later she is listening to rain make its way through the diversity of the leaves in a forest. She things she’s hearing things but the rain dripping from the hemlock sounds different than the rain of the maple. “Shhhhh from rain, pitpitpit from hemlock, bloink from maple, and lastly popp of falling alder water. Alder drops make a slow music. It takes time for fine rain to traverse the scabrous rough surface of an alder leaf. The drops aren’t as big as maple drops, not enough to splash, but the popp ripples the surface and sends out concentric rings. I close my eyes and listen to the voices of the rain … Every drip it seems is changed by its relationship with life, whether it encounters moss or maple or fir bark or my hair. And we think of it as simply rain, as if it were one thing, as if we understood it. I think that moss knows rain better than we do, and so do maples. Maybe there is no such thing as rain; there are only raindrops, each with its own story (Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass, pg. 299). The moment in which we find ourselves, where the world teeters at the edge of destruction, where the lives of the poor and and the lives of those deemed less alive than others are already being destroyed – this moment was brought about by a type of thinking which sees the world as dead. Creatures, plants, animals, trees, all the variable formations of the substance of Earth, soil, clay, gold, coal, oil, these are all things to be used for the increase of the pleasure and capital of man, they’re never living, they’re never verbs. That consciousness, which still permeates us, is what’s causing the world’s destruction. And the world’s repair is dependent on old wisdoms whose annihilation was attempted. Healing dependence on the emergence within each of us, of a new consciousness, which recognizes the gifts of living beings in nearly all the communions of our day. The first sip of water upon waking in the morning, the coffee bean, the wheat, the sunlight, the air, the paper, the medicine, the bath, the beeswax candle, the golden ring, the avocados and the meat – each of these a gift, a sacrifice that will form the bodies of our children. Everything is alive, everywhere is the opportunity for communion. The greatest teacher in this seismic shift in human consciousness will be water. Water is the substance of communion. Water is the blood and drink of every life on Earth, willow, catalpa, mosquito, ocean, child, it doesn’t matter. Water is forming canyons and swimming in the bellies of whales. The water of the kettle ponds of Cape Cod that are forming the first water memories of my daughters, where have these waters been before? What tranquility, what sorrows, what visions and depths have they known. Water has memory, and each time I drink and bathe I am offered a lesson in the animacy of all the life forms to whom that water gave life before me. Rabbi Yudah bar Ilai said, the Tree of Life was five hundred years wide and all the waters of creation gushed and streamed beneath it. Rabbi Yudan said in his name, that was not the end of it. Not only its boughs even its trunk was a five hundred year journey (Bereshit Rabbah 15:6) I used to think that we were far from prayer, uncomfortable with its language and imagery. Now I see it everywhere. Prayer is all of the activities where we acknowledge the gifts of those beings that are giving us life. The acts where we hold the immensity of our being, the waters of our varied deep in stillness. Everywhere where the soul looks out from the pools of our eyes and sees a creature mirroring the gestures which continue in the realm of her deep unceasing. Prayer becomes whole with the consciousness that the soul is always praying.. Does she not fly to be near her beloved (Song of Songs 8:5) without any break at all? It is only that, in the time of active prayer, the soul’s ceaseless prayer is actively revealed. And this is her joy and pleasure, the splendor and beauty of prayer, which is like a rose that opens its petals to meet the dew or the rays of the sun which appear on her in light. “Oh, that one would pray all day long!” (Berachot 21a) (Rav Kook, Olat Reiyah) Prayer is the means to overcome that we’ve forgotten that a part of us is always praying. Prayer is the recognition of the lack by which we enter the sanctuary. We enter through prayer and go out through communion. This is the choreography of that process. We return to animacy and gift consciousness. We remember that all the goodness of our lives is a gift received from other living beings, it’s not ours. Our breath our love our family our sustenance, gifts. Our lifeforce, our name, our who am I - does not belong to us. In prayer we remember, and we return the gift. We pour back what’s been given to us, the beauties and the wounds. When we’ve poured and poured, in that state we meet an emptiness that paradoxically, is the very thing that can fill us up with God. When we empty of ourselves, kenosis, God cannot help but rush to fill us up. In through prayer, out through communion. The above images and Emoto’s claims provoked an international reaction in the scientific community and beyond it, which led to the fact that his research was taken seriously by some scientists and was heavily criticized by some others. As such, Dr. William Reville, a professor of biochemistry at University College Cork in Ireland, believes that there is little evidence behind Emoro’s claims. First of all, the results of the research were never peer-reviewed but were only published in an alternative science journal. Secondly, other studies, aimed to confirm Emoto’s results, failed to show a similar effect on water crystals. According to Dr. Reville, Emoto’s research lacks valid scientific methods and sufficient experimental controls since the formation of water crystals can be influenced by many factors. It means that the results of Emoto’s experiments are very subjective and could be easily manipulated and are prone to human error. “It is very unlikely that there is any reality behind Emoto’s claims. I have no reason to doubt Emoto’s sincerity, but his work bears many hallmarks of a pseudoscience”, said Dr. Reville. Are you convinced? As you can see, the scientific community has found faults in both Benveniste’s and Emoto’s experiments rejecting them as valid, even though both scientists made bold claims, giving us some food for thought. What are your thoughts on the topic? Does water have memory and consciousness of its own or is it just a fancy idea inspired by New Age claims? What are the waters above and under the firmament (Genesis 1:7)? Genesis 1:7 says, “God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so” (NKJV). This verse is part of the creation account and the second day of creation. The term translated “firmament” (Hebrew raqia) refers to an expanse or sky, something stretched out, and is often translated as “expanse” or “vault” in modern Bible versions. According to Genesis 1:8, “God called the firmament Heaven” (NKJV), indicating that it refers to the sky or the heavens above the earth. The waters “under the firmament” are easy to understand. These refer to the waters on the earth—oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, and subterranean water sources. These are the waters that we see and interact with on the earth’s surface. Later, in Genesis 1:9–10, God gathers these waters into one place, allowing dry land to appear, which He calls Earth and Seas. This shows that the waters under the firmament are the terrestrial waters that are part of the earth’s physical geography. The waters “above the firmament” have been the subject of more debate. One interpretation is that these waters refer to a vapor canopy or a layer of water that once surrounded the earth’s atmosphere. This idea suggests that, before the global flood described in Genesis 6—9, the earth may have been enveloped in a protective layer of water vapor, which could have contributed to a greenhouse-like environment. This canopy theory is speculative but has been proposed by some creation scientists to help explain the long lifespans before the flood and the global deluge itself (Genesis 7:11–12). Another interpretation is that the waters “above” are simply the clouds and atmospheric moisture. This view aligns with our current understanding of the water cycle, where water exists in the atmosphere in the form of vapor and clouds. Psalm 148:4 supports this idea: “Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!” (ESV). This poetic language suggests that even the atmospheric waters are part of God’s creation and under His command. Regardless of the specific nature of the waters “above,” the key theological point is that God is sovereign over all creation. He brought order by separating and assigning boundaries to the elements of the universe. Psalm 19:1 declares, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork” (ESV). The firmament, or sky, is a visible testimony to God’s creative power and design. In summary, the “waters under the firmament” are the earthly bodies of water, while the “waters above the firmament” could refer either to a now-absent water canopy or to the atmospheric waters such as clouds. Water, in whatever place it is found, is part of God’s ordered creation, demonstrating His authority and wisdom in forming a world that sustains life and reflects His glory. Water is Life – Water Holds Memory... Yes Exodus 14:13-31 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lord pushed the sea back by a strong east wind all night, turning the sea into dry land. The waters were split into two. The Israelites walked into the sea on dry ground. The waters formed a wall for them on their right hand and on their left. The Egyptians chased them and went into the sea after them, all of Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and cavalry. As morning approached, the Lord looked down on the Egyptian camp from the column of lightning and cloud and threw the Egyptian camp into a panic.The Lord jammed their chariot wheels so that they wouldn’t turn easily. The Egyptians said, “Let’s get away from the Israelites, because the Lord is fighting for them against Egypt!” Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the water comes back and covers the Egyptians, their chariots, and their cavalry.” So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. At daybreak, the sea returned to its normal depth. The Egyptians were driving toward it, and the Lord tossed the Egyptians into the sea. The waters returned and covered the chariots and the cavalry, Pharaoh’s entire army that had followed them into the sea. Not one of them remained. The Israelites, however, walked on dry ground through the sea. The waters formed a wall for them on their right hand and on their left. The Lord rescued Israel from the Egyptians that day. Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. Israel saw the amazing power of the Lord against the Egyptians. The people were in awe of the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses. From water in a drop of dew—arriving gently in the waking dawn of the day in the tiniest of miracles. To Water—symbolizing the wild, the untamable, the mysteries of the deep. From the Chattahoochee watershed fought for in water wars for generations to the Sweetwater Creek on the southside where the remnants of factories burnt in the Civil War still stand. Water is our history. Water is the reason the Muscogee people, descendants of the predominant Mississippian peoples, were named “Creek,” by the colonizers. They settled and built mounds and small pyramid structures next to flowing water. Water. Is. Life. Water—bespeaking the spirit of God pouring from the fountain of earth. Water—embodying the very building block of evolution. We, each of us, becomes and grows in water. When we are born, on average the bodies of babies are made up of 78% water. Water is Life. Pablo Neruda wrote in his Sonnet 34 an ode to the waters of one’s life: You are the daughter of the sea, oregano’s first cousin Swimmer, your body is pure as the water; Everything you do is full of flowers, rich with the earth Your eyes go out toward the water, and the waves rise; Your hands go out to the earth and the seeds swell; you know the deep essence of water and the earth, conjoined in you like a formula for clay Water is life. The voices of indigenous water protectors ring out still from the Lakota and the Sioux, indigenous and native-allies. Mni Winconi -Water is life. Water is life- we say this honoring the watershed, the Chattahoochee; we say water is life speaking out loud the history of these words and placing it also in our biblical tradition as well. Water commanded by Jesus. Walked upon and then calmed by our Black messiah. Water that welcomed and baptized John, Jesus and the Ethiopian. All of whom God called Good. Water was in the beginning. God spoke over the water. Life emerged from the water. Water IS life. Theories of the origins of freshwater on earth are fascinating. Scientists used to believe predominantly that freshwater must have originated on the earth from asteroid impacts in the solar system. SPACE WATER!!! I love that! Especially in light of water’s preternatural ability to measure impact. Water itself coming from collision and explosion is fascinating. It is now the pervasive theory that hydrogen and oxygen present in the gaseous formation of planet earth are what make up the underground fresh water system. Water formed from the cosmos. Water is life. Particularly for desert cultures in a place from which essential diatoms in the cycle of how life evolved. For the fleeing Israelites pinned between the bellicose army of the hard-hearted Pharoah and the water of the sea of reeds, water was a natural barrier. For every desert culture water represented life—YES—water was wild and unpredictable, but water, referenced 722 times in the Bible, was a GIFT from God—NOT THIS TIME. In this case of military maneuvering and the cat and mouse game playing out between enslaved people and their oppressors—this water had them trapped. They were pinned in. There was nowhere to go. The waters formed a wall for them on their right hand and on their left. “Do not be afraid, stand firm, and see the deliverance that the Lord will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you see today you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to keep still.” In the middle of the desert wilderness, a generation of enslaved people who were probably terrified heard these words. Feeling trapped and pinned down; families and children; I must keep walking; try not to cry; our bodies need all the water we have. The impending wave of cavalry; hooves pounding; could they hear it? Could they see the earth moving? The Egyptians charge forward toward the retreating Israelites, as those faithful words escape the mouth of God’s chosen—Moses. “Do not be afraid.” Water is Life. And the Lord said unto Moses, “Why do you cry out to me? Tell the Israelites to go forward. But lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the Israelites may go into the sea on dry ground.” The description in this scripture is repetitive; the water formed a wall to the Israelites right and to their left. The wall of water is exactly HOW the sea parts. The water formed walls on both the right and the left of the fleeing people. This must have sounded so unimaginable to early listeners of this story. Walls of Water—Walls of wildness—Walls of salvation in a dry world; Walls of the stuff of LIFE—held back by the One true God. WATER is LIFE. Yet—this image might have lost its earth-shattering significance. You or I might just picture walking through the aquarium. Water conveniently held in place by giant tanks on either side; the blue reflective water showing us the secrets of the deep while we walk on dry ground. When trying to describe this passage to [my child] Luis, who hasn’t yet been to the aquarium—I found myself making the comparison to the movie MOANA—one of our most favorite movies; you remember the part—when the Ocean is calling to a young Moana; beckoning her toward her destiny; even though she is yet a toddler; The ocean offers shells to entice the curious little Moana to walk into the parting water toward the heart of Tahiti ; the journey of her life; that would bring her around the world and you see the walls of water around her. In the water she would find herself and redefine her people’s history. The walls of water have captivated imaginations throughout time. The Israelites walked on dry land through the water, which was all around them on their left and on their right. There have been countless writings on the symbolism of this phrasing. These writings of biblical imagination are an amazing and rich tradition that is the foundation of the rabbinic Judaism, the modern tradition. Modern Judaism is very different today, but the words of the ancient rabbis come from the oral tradition that was, at least in part, preserved through the work of the Pharisees. I make this distinction to honor this tradition and make a point about antisemitism or ANY ONE group who is wholly denigrated or written off. These beautiful lessons come from the work of the Pharisees. One of these beautiful imaginings about this part of the Exodus story has stuck with me for over 5 years. I first heard of this Rabbinic writing when I led a group painting a mural at the Congregation Bet Haverim during the Passover season. With this group we wove our stories together through images and paint in a process of communal remembering, recognition and creativity. I never forgot the teaching that day from the Mishnah that Rabbi Josh Lesser offered. The rabbis wrote that when the Israelites looked into the walls of water on their left and on their right they could see all of their ancestors; they could see all of their people that ever have been. As they walked toward their freedom, leaning into the strong hands of their redeeming God, they looked into the walls of water staring down their past and even into their future, for the Rabbis wrote that it wasn’t just their foreparents that were presented in the walls of water, it was all the generations to come. On this past Sunday in the Christian tradition we celebrated All Saints Day. And I think it’s important on this Sunday in particular that we hear a message of recognizing our ancestors. We too can see our foreparents and be reminded of the impact of our lives through water. Yes we will light candles as is tradition, and on this Sunday we can use water in an even more ancient tradition to remember the generations past. The Israelites saw their whole lives. Their families, lost in the brutal life of enslavement; their foreparents who came to the land of Egypt and thrived and even their children and grandchildren to come surviving and persevering through times of insecurity and turmoil. They say it all in the wall of water. Water is life. Water, this reflective surface; light bouncing off dancing water, still today, might show us our whole lives. Water has memory. Water holds the ripples of impact. Water is impacted by our actions. In the book The Hidden Messages in Water Masaro Emoto wrote about water’s replicating and responsive properties, a conclusion he demonstrates through observing water crystals. He spent years photographing these microscopic individual snowflake-like shapes that ice forms right before melting. According to this research, water that was infused with positivity and love responded in the production of authentic symmetrical crystals. Water that was exposed to negativity either could not form crystals or produced half formed shapes. If water is life because of the positivity and energy in this flowing living water, then water too can and is impacted by pollution and negativity, even more than we know. Water is scarce in many places and in others it has been contaminated and infused with negativity. Here in Georgia the Savannah River site and Plant Vogel have degraded the quality of the Savannah River. Reports cite that the river is 70% polluted. Not sure if one can measure the impact of this pollution in numbers alone. This flowing water, from which no crystals could form, people depend on in the watershed. Water is life, but we must treat it as the life-giving force that it is. If we look deeply into the wall of water, will we see for the first time why water is so important in our identities. If we look genuinely into the water, we too can remember our ancestors. We can recognize ourselves as the ripples of their impact, and we are building the future with the next generation. On this All Saints Sunday we would like to honor our ancestors. We build from what they did and left us. And just as Water mirrors and reflects vibrations in sound and frequency. Water can help us remember who we are as well. I’m reminded of that part in the Lion King (yes another reference to Disney’s works!)—but you remember that part. The Lion King is classic; It’s when Rafiki has found Simba in the far away woods living his life with no worries. Rafiki tells Simba that his father Mufasa is still there. Unbelieving but desperate to connect, Simba follows Rafiki through a dark and twisted wood until he emerges over the water and looks at the surface. “Look again” cackles Rafiki and suddenly Mufasa manifests from the water all the way to the clouds (another form of water) to remind Simba of who he is. Water is life. Water can speak life to us. Water is so powerful and wild. Water is precious and important. The story of the Israelites might once have been the lesson of God’s chosen people, but I’ve also heard it said that God wept for the lost Egyptians as well. Water is Life, and it can be our death if we forget ourselves or forget the unrestrained capability of the large seas. As the Genesis story recounts, God spoke over the swirling water, so water existed alongside the authenticator of life. Water is life. Jesus offered living water at the well; this offer is for all. Jesus, who tamed the wild waters, and walked, and spoke over and washed in the waters. Jesus whose very body began at 78% water, like us all. Water is in us all. Water is life, and our lives are infused and enriched. So let us connect again with our essential element. Let us connect again with ourselves, as Neruda reminds us, “You are the daughter [or son, or sibling or progeny] of the sea…Your body is pure as the water.” You have no need to cleanse yourself, just be as the water you are from within, adaptable, impressionable, seeking balance and being and reflecting what is around you. It is within us all. We can remember our ancestors this morning. We have placed our photos on the altar, next to bowls of positively infused water. Let’s practice active remembering this morning. There are stations around the sanctuary to utilize water to actively remember; touch the water and remember your baptism, look into the water and see your foreparents reflected; remember your ancestors, let the water transport you. Water Has Memory Struggling to process the overwhelming transformations of his life, Olaf the magic snowman of Frozen 2, resorts to mindless recitation of strange facts of science and myth that he picked up from god knows where. If you’ve watched Frozen 2 more times than you care to count, the aphorisms appear in your consciousness at odd moments of life no different than ancient rabbinic teachings. “Did you know that turtles can breathe through their butts?” If you take the time to google his quotes you learn strange things. Some turtles actually do breathe through their butts, in winter hibernation cloacal respiration is their main form of oxygen. More essential to the plot of the story though is this one – Olaf says, “Water has Memory.” In 1988, a French biologist specializing in immunology named Jacques Benveniste, published a paper in Nature demonstrating that water can retain memories of compounds even when diluted at a very high level. Homeopathists were thrilled by the validation, other scientists not so much. His experiment was not quite replicable, and the brouhaha has taken many turns. Nonetheless, in Frozen 2, Elsa is retracing the histories of an unresolved past that continues to call to her. At each of the reverberant places of her journey, she communes with the local waters that remember everything they once witnessed: the death of her parents, her grandfathers’ murder and deceit of the indigenous people of the land, her mother’s act of love that bridged worlds. With her magic and the capacities of water, she transmutes the lost images of the past into living ice sculptures for everyone to see. Water has memory. The pop culture equivalent of Frozen amongst the demographic of naturalist literature enthusiasts is Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass. Ten thousand people have asked if I’ve read it and until this summer I answered no. Staying at my friend Abby Paloma’s house as we transitioned to life upstate, it was living on her dining table like a bible and I couldn’t help myself, I got fifty pages into her copy and then bought my own so I could underline and fold down corners, the last book of a long summer reading list. I think the book has been devoured by the moment because of its rare vantage that brings worlds together. Kimmerere is a member of Potowatomi Nation and a professor of environmental biology, and the book weaves these two ways of knowing together, indigineous plant wisdom and natural science. There is an attitude in the culture now that says you’re not allowed to speak of anything outside your lane. But what we’re really yearning for is people who bring worlds together in strange unexpected ways, old forms crumbling, new ways of knowing emergent. In a divisive time the hunger for communion is ravenous. She’s telling the story of trying to learn the language of her ancestors. The living speakers of potawatomi are few, and they are old. Where European languages often assign gender, Potowatomi does not. But it does distinguish animate from inanimate forms, living from nonliving things, and the living are addressed with entirely different language. But who decides what is living? Are the moths that I sucked up into my vacuum cleaner living? The mice in my mouse traps? Snakes, trees, grass, rocks, carrots, clouds, wind, strawberries, tobacco, sweetgrass, water? The subtleties of a culture’s language reveals its considerations. “Pages blurred and my eyes settled on a word – a verb, of course: ‘to be a Saturday.’ Pfft! I threw down the book. Since when is Saturday a verb? Everyone knows it’s a noun. I grabbed the dictionary and flipped more pages and all kinds of things seemed to be verbs: ‘to be a hill,’ ‘to be red,’ ‘to be a long sandy stretch of beach,’ and then my finger rested on wiikwegamaa: ‘to be a bay.’ ‘Ridiculous!’ … And then I swear I heard the zap of synapses firing … In that moment I could smell the water of the bay, watch it rock against the shore and hear it sift onto the sand. A bay is a noun only if water is dead. When bay is a noun, it is defined by humans, trapped between its shores and contained by the word. But the verb wiikwegamaa – to be a bay – releases the water from bondage and lets it live. ‘To be a bay’ holds the wonder that, for this moment, the living water has decided to shelter itself between these shores, conversing with cedar roots and a flock of baby mergansers. Because it could do otherwise – become a stream or an ocean or a waterfall, and there are verbs for that, too … Water, land, and even a day, the language a mirror for seeing the animacy of the world, the life that pulses through all things … this is the grammar of animacy” (Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass, pg. 55). Later she is listening to rain make its way through the diversity of the leaves in a forest. She things she’s hearing things but the rain dripping from the hemlock sounds different than the rain of the maple. “Shhhhh from rain, pitpitpit from hemlock, bloink from maple, and lastly popp of falling alder water. Alder drops make a slow music. It takes time for fine rain to traverse the scabrous rough surface of an alder leaf. The drops aren’t as big as maple drops, not enough to splash, but the popp ripples the surface and sends out concentric rings. I close my eyes and listen to the voices of the rain … Every drip it seems is changed by its relationship with life, whether it encounters moss or maple or fir bark or my hair. And we think of it as simply rain, as if it were one thing, as if we understood it. I think that moss knows rain better than we do, and so do maples. Maybe there is no such thing as rain; there are only raindrops, each with its own story (Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass, pg. 299). The moment in which we find ourselves, where the world teeters at the edge of destruction, where the lives of the poor and and the lives of those deemed less alive than others are already being destroyed – this moment was brought about by a type of thinking which sees the world as dead. Creatures, plants, animals, trees, all the variable formations of the substance of Earth, soil, clay, gold, coal, oil, these are all things to be used for the increase of the pleasure and capital of man, they’re never living, they’re never verbs. That consciousness, which still permeates us, is what’s causing the world’s destruction. And the world’s repair is dependent on old wisdoms whose annihilation was attempted. Healing dependence on the emergence within each of us, of a new consciousness, which recognizes the gifts of living beings in nearly all the communions of our day. The first sip of water upon waking in the morning, the coffee bean, the wheat, the sunlight, the air, the paper, the medicine, the bath, the beeswax candle, the golden ring, the avocados and the meat – each of these a gift, a sacrifice that will form the bodies of our children. Everything is alive, everywhere is the opportunity for communion. The greatest teacher in this seismic shift in human consciousness will be water. Water is the substance of communion. Water is the blood and drink of every life on Earth, willow, catalpa, mosquito, ocean, child, it doesn’t matter. Water is forming canyons and swimming in the bellies of whales. The water of the kettle ponds of Cape Cod that are forming the first water memories of my daughters, where have these waters been before? What tranquility, what sorrows, what visions and depths have they known. Water has memory, and each time I drink and bathe I am offered a lesson in the animacy of all the life forms to whom that water gave life before me. Rabbi Yudah bar Ilai said, the Tree of Life was five hundred years wide and all the waters of creation gushed and streamed beneath it. Rabbi Yudan said in his name, that was not the end of it. Not only its boughs even its trunk was a five hundred year journey (Bereshit Rabbah 15:6) I used to think that we were far from prayer, uncomfortable with its language and imagery. Now I see it everywhere. Prayer is all of the activities where we acknowledge the gifts of those beings that are giving us life. The acts where we hold the immensity of our being, the waters of our varied deep in stillness. Everywhere where the soul looks out from the pools of our eyes and sees a creature mirroring the gestures which continue in the realm of her deep unceasing. Prayer becomes whole with the consciousness that the soul is always praying.. Does she not fly to be near her beloved (Song of Songs 8:5) without any break at all? It is only that, in the time of active prayer, the soul’s ceaseless prayer is actively revealed. And this is her joy and pleasure, the splendor and beauty of prayer, which is like a rose that opens its petals to meet the dew or the rays of the sun which appear on her in light. “Oh, that one would pray all day long!” (Berachot 21a) (Rav Kook, Olat Reiyah) Prayer is the means to overcome that we’ve forgotten that a part of us is always praying. Prayer is the recognition of the lack by which we enter the sanctuary. We enter through prayer and go out through communion. This is the choreography of that process. We return to animacy and gift consciousness. We remember that all the goodness of our lives is a gift received from other living beings, it’s not ours. Our breath our love our family our sustenance, gifts. Our lifeforce, our name, our who am I - does not belong to us. In prayer we remember, and we return the gift. We pour back what’s been given to us, the beauties and the wounds. When we’ve poured and poured, in that state we meet an emptiness that paradoxically, is the very thing that can fill us up with God. When we empty of ourselves, kenosis, God cannot help but rush to fill us up. In through prayer, out through communion.
