Silvana Mangano (Roma, 21 aprile 1930 – Madrid, 16 dicembre 1989) è stata un'attrice italiana. Tra le maggiori attrici del cinema italiano, per le sue interpretazioni ha ottenuto tre David di Donatello e tre Nastri d'argento. Ha sedici anni quando nel 1946, Silvana Mangano vince il concorso di miss Roma. È bella e viene subito notata da registi di fama e tra loro Giuseppe De Santis, che la scelse come la mondina protagonista del suo film Riso amaro, che farà di lei un’icona. Sul set conosce il produttore Dino De Laurentiis, che sposerà nel 1949 e da cui avrà quattro figli. Tra gli altri film che la videro protagonista ricordiamo Mambo, del 1954, La grande guerra di Mario Monicelli del 1959 che vince il Leone d’oro a Venezia; nel 1960 è la protagonista di Jovanka e le altre, uno dei ruoli più drammatici da lei interpretati; nel 1961 interpreta Crimen di Mario Camerini. Nel 1963 diventa Edda Ciano ne Il processo di Verona per la regia di Carlo Lizzani. Gli anni Sessanta sono i più proficui per l’attrice romana. Pier Paolo Pasolini la vuole con se in La terra vista dalla luna, Edipo Re, Teorema e nel Decameron. Le scriverà in seguito: “Gli aspetti della tua natura, puntualità, senso del dovere, lealtà, producono, strano a dirsi, il mistero della tua bellezza. La tua bellezza amara: che si offre incombente, come una teofania, uno splendore di perla; mentre in realtà, tu sei lontana“. Rimase quindi lontana dallo schermo per un lungo periodo, poco felice anche per la sua vita privata: nel 1981 perse il figlio Federico in un incidente aereo, un lutto dal quale non riuscì mai a risollevarsi completamente, e, tra il 1984 e il 1985, si separò dal marito, trasferendosi a Madrid. Proprio nel 1984 era ritornata al cinema, nell'inquietante ruolo della sacerdotessa Ramallo per il fantascientifico Dune di D. Lynch, prodotto dalla figlia Raffaella. Nel 1987, già malata di tumore, interpretò il suo ultimo film, Oci ciornie di N. Michalkov, nel ruolo della borghese Elisa, moglie dello spiantato Romano, interpretato da Mastroianni. La Mangano morì a Madrid il 16 dicembre 1989.
