While he doesn’t usually get much press, Joseph, the man who raised Jesus, sets an excellent example for us to follow. Satan likes to dangle temptations in front of our faces, hoping to lure us into sin and then pull the old bait-and-switch to bring us to destruction. Fortunately, Jesus’ example of how to face temptations in Matthew 4:1-11 cues us into Satan’s tricks and gives us the ammo we need to defend ourselves against getting caught in Satan’s snares. Jesus expounds on some pretty extreme rules in the Sermon on the Mount, which causes one to realize that keeping them is all but impossible. But as we will see in Matthew 5:17-30, Jesus has an agenda behind what He is saying to show that He is God, He is the fulfillment of the law, and it is only through Him that we can be declared righteous.
