This isn’t “shock history.” It’s pattern recognition: when collectivism becomes a total vision—when it demands moral submission to “the collective good”—it reliably moves toward coercion. In Segment 2 of this series, we move from biblical framing to history—and I’ll tell you up front: this one is heavy, but it matters. Collectivism almost never introduces itself as control. It introduces itself as care: people are hurting, systems are unfair, some have too much, others don’t have enough—and if we’ll just commit to the collective mission, we can finally create “warmth.” The problem is what happens when “care” becomes the justification for coercion, and toxic empathy turns compassion into a moral weapon: agree… or be labeled cold. So we study a name many people don’t know nearly as well as Hitler, Stalin, or Mao—Pol Pot, leader of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia (1975–1979). We talk about “Year Zero,” the utopian reset that demanded the erasure of independence—markets dismantled, property confiscated, people relocated, work assigned, society reorganized around forced labor—and why collectivist revolutions always seem to need enemies. And we don’t do it as a “history nerd” moment. We do it because ideas don’t stay in speeches. They take bread. They take borders. They take bodies. This episode isn’t saying every policy that helps the poor is Pol Pot—that’s lazy and false.
