Ashkenazi Jews - Jews who traditionally lived in Eastern and Central Europe, and to a lesser extent Western Europe, for centuries. Their ancestors came from the Middle East into southern Europe, then moved northwards in the Middle Ages., They were heavily concentrated in Poland, Romania, the Soviet Union, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia. Ashkenazi communities existed elsewhere throughout Europe, including France, Germany, and Italy. . Sephardi Jews - Descendants of the Jews had arrived in 1492 in Spain from the Middle East and North Africa from antiquity into the Middle Ages. They primarily settled throughout North Africa following their expulsion. Smaller communities were found in Turkey, Syria, the Land of Israel, Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Romania, and the Balkans. In these places, they absorbed the pre-existing Jewish communities so their descent is not entirely from Spanish Jews. For example, North African Sephardim are descended both from Spanish Jews and the pre-existing Maghrebi Jewish communities whose roots there go back to antiquity when Jews migrated to North Africa from Judea or were dispersed there by the Romans. (not the Sephardim who came later in the 19th and 20th centuries) . Mizrahi Jews - These are the Jews of the communities throughout the Middle East. They include Iraqi Jews, Persian Jews, Kurdish Jews, Yemenite Jews, Afghan Jews, as well as Central Asian Jewish communities which are likely offshoots of Persian/Iraqi Jews (Bukharan Jews, Georgian Jews, and Mountain Jews). Many of these communities trace their origins to the historic Babylonian exile from ancient Israel, as well as later emigration and dispersions of Jews from the Levant. Sometimes Sephardi Jews from North Africa as well as Lebanese and Syrian Jews and Jews whose families never left Israel for the diaspora are also identified as Mizrahim. And in spite of the fact that Sephardi means Spanish Jews, sometimes Mizrahi communities not primarily consisting of descendants of Spanish Jews such as Yemenite or Iraqi Jews are lumped in as Sephardim. . Khazar Jews - In the Khazar Khaganate, a Medieval Turkic empire in the Caucasus, some members of the nobility and maybe some other locals converted to Judaism. There is a theory that there was in fact a mass conversion of Khazars to Judaism, that after the collapse of the Khazar empire, they fled to Eastern Europe, and as a result Ashkenazi Jews are in fact descendants of Turkic converts to Judaism and not of the ancient Israelites. This theory is not accepted by most historians and geneticists but some still push it. While there were conversions to Judaism among the Khazars, there is no evidence of mass conversions, and genetic research has found that Ashkenazi Jews do not have significant Turkic ancestry. . .
