Grouse Hunting

What a day in the North Woods. Few things compare to walking the woods with your dog, surrounded by the beauty of God’s creation. I hope this brings you the same joy it brought me.

Every hunt this dog has improved her skills hunting and pointing grouse and woodcock. The same is not true for me.

It's hard to believe that a old man can have this much fun with a dog in the Grouse Woods. Thistle put on a performance like you would read about in the Grouse Hunters Magazine, but can't say much for the shooter.

This is our first grouse hunt for the 2025 season in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.

It climbed into the sixties today, perfect for roaming the Northwoods but tough on scenting conditions for a dog working grouse. Whistle had a hard time with the light scent and bumped a few birds while trying to pin them.

We hiked two miles along a stunning trail, passing through prime grouse habitat. Despite the surroundings, Whistle never seemed to pick up on a bird scent. But as we made our way back to the truck, we spotted three grouse happily feeding on the clover right in the parking area. It just goes to show you never know where you’ll find them!

Hunting the Houdini Grouse today we’re chasing escape artists that always seem to know the right direction to fly. They have an uncanny sense for the safest getaway route, and they’re experts at making a hunter feel like a fool.

Thistle is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you'll get until you take her hunting. Some days she can be a Reese cup and some days she can be coconut cream. I hate coconut cream and today she was coconut cream.

I made a lucky shot and crippled a Grouse. Whistle did a great job of tracking it and finally found it. Another great day in the North Woods.
