Beautiful soy farms like this are struggling to survive
WildCreaturesSoy is one of the world's largest agricultural crops. We now produce more than 13 times the amount of soy that we did in the 1960s. While people might think that human food is the biggest use for soy, only 20% of the soy produced is used for human consumption. The remaining 80% of soy is used for feeding pigs and chickens in large farm operations. Brazil is the world's leading producer of soy, with U.S.A. being the second. The amount of land used for soy production in the U.S. has more than doubled since the year 2000. This is a farm in Central Ontario, Canada. As the weather begins to get cooler, these farmers are in a race against time to harvest their crop. They need ideal drying conditions prior to cutting the plants so that the crops will store properly and stay viable for shipping. Soy farming is a difficult, but beautiful process, especially when viewed from the air, as this drone footage shows us. China is the world's largest importer of soy, using it to produce tofu, soy sauce, and other soy products for human consumption. The recent changes in trade between various countries has turned the world economic partnerships upside down.809 views 6 comments -
Distracted driver smashes into slowing car in front of him, caught on dashcam
WildCreaturesDistracted driving is the cause of a shocking number of collisions every year. Many involve a rear-end collision, such as this one. This Honda Civic is equipped with front and rear cameras. As the Honda driver slows and signals for a left turn, the camera captures a rapidly approaching crossover SUV, driven by an inattentive and distracted driver. Although it cannot be proven, it is likely that the SUV's driver is looking at their phone. Traffic is coming from the other direction, and the Honda comes to a full stop. The SUV continues as if the driver cannot see the road ahead of him. A moment before the collision, the SUV makes a slight move to the right. It appears to brake. This would have been the correct action a few seconds before, but the obvious errors here render the evasive action almost useless. The left, front corner of SUV strikes the Honda on the right, rear corner. This spins the Honda, lessening the impact on the driver within, but it also pushes his vehicle into the path of oncoming traffic. Fortunately, the traffic coming the other way evaded the front of the Honda. The Honda driver correctly signalled, slowed, and kept his wheels straight. He waited for oncoming traffic to pass before beginning a left turn. He was unable to do anything to avoid being struck. The SUV driver later claimed that his considerable driving skill allowed him to swerve and lessen the impact. He wanted credit for driving defensively. But this collision should not have happened. It was entirely due to the fact that the driver failed to recognize the hazard in front of him and he was travelling much too fast to react when he finally did look ahead. Looking at the moment before the collision, the SUV is meeting an oncoming transport truck, on a curve. He drifts to the right, over the fog line. This is exactly what we would expect from somebody who was looking at a phone and using peripheral vision to help him stay in his lane. He would unconsciously drift to the right as the truck came into his view. If he is looking at a phone, on a curve, with this much traffic, the risk he is creating is tremendous. Regardless of what the SUV driver was doing, he was distracted or oblivious to the road ahead until it was far too late. No amount of braking or swerving will help much now. The driver of the Honda called police and explained his actions. The SUV driver also explained his actions, congratulating himself on such quick thinking, believing that the collision had been unavoidable. The police officer charged him with careless driving. Both insurance companies agreed that the SUV driver was 100% at fault. The dash cam footage made the investigation much simpler and it also gives us a close look at the consequences of distracted driving. These are not "accidents". They simply should never happen. It was sheer luck that nobody was seriously injured or killed in this collision.1.16K views 4 comments -
