As a dad, I believe every life has value and I am proud to be pro-life. Sadly, this unalienable right has fallen under renewed attack as radical abortion advocates push for on-demand abortion, up until and even after birth, paid for by your tax dollars. For decades, the Hyde Amendment has prohibited tax dollars from funding abortions and received overwhelmingly bipartisan support. In fact, the Hyde Amendment has been renewed every year since 1976, under majorities and Presidents of both parties, including President Barack Obama. But in a radical shift in policy, President Joe Biden recently released his budget which did not include pro-life protections or the Hyde Amendment. Americans must not be forced to violate their conscience to pay for abortions. That's why just last week, House Republicans demanded a vote on the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. It's a sad commentary this bill even needs to be considered. But in the face of new threats from those who support abortion, I will never stop demanding we protect the lives of the most vulnerable in our community. Every year, legal immigrants flock to the United States for their own pursuit of happiness that is found in our nation of liberty. I welcome these immigrants who come legally to America, the greatest nation in the world. However, recently we have seen the dangers posed to our nation by illegal immigration. In the last week, both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump each took a trip to the border to see the Biden Border Crisis firsthand. The Biden administration's plan to halt the construction of the wall and reinstate catch-and-release has had disastrous consequences. In the last month, Border Agents encountered 180,000 illegal immigrants at the border, the highest number in 21 years. Unchecked illegal immigration allows cartels to maintain control and traffic families and drugs into the United States. These consequences of open border policies threaten the rights of all legal immigrants and citizens to pursue their own happiness – something that goes against our nation's founding. Last week, I highlighted policies that have worked and can work again to secure our border and protect our country. In order to maintain the pursuit of happiness for everyone, we must solve this border crisis. The principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are not just hollow words on an old, tattered document. Instead, they exemplify our country and must be fought for every day. What Age Does Your Freedom Start ? A child's journey toward freedom begins from early childhood, as they gradually develop autonomy and independence. While children under the age of 11 or 12 generally should not go out alone due to developmental immaturity, the desire for freedom typically emerges around ages 11 or 12,coinciding with the onset of puberty and adolescence. This period marks a shift where children begin to demand more autonomy and freedom of movement and thought. Developmentally, the focus of freedom evolves over time. In early adolescence (around ages 9–13), the primary focus is on freedom from being treated as a child, often expressed through a desire to act older. By mid-adolescence (ages 13–15), the emphasis shifts to freedom of association with peers, forming close friendships and a sense of identity separate from the family. In late adolescence (ages 15–18), experimentation with adult-like behaviors such as driving, dating, or part-time work becomes a priority as teens test boundaries and explore adult experiences. The process of granting freedom should be gradual, based on maturity, geographic safety, and consistent communication between parent and child. How Much Freedom Should Parents Allow Teens to Have? Sometimes, though, being too protective and/or rigid can backfire and the teen will rebel. The key is to create a balance between dependence and independence as the adolescent slowly transitions to adulthood, typically between the ages of 10 and 25. The way I see it, my parents will give me as much freedom as I can prove to them that I can handle. If I show that I am responsible and do the things that they ask, then yeah, I anticipate that they will give me a little more freedom. I also expect that if my grades start slipping or they feel that I am not holding up my end of the bargain with the expectations that have been set, I expect them to tighten the reins again until I prove to them that I can do it and they will let me try again. While many parents underestimate their teen’s readiness for certain privileges and freedoms, most teens overestimate their readiness to take on certain privileges and responsibilities. I typically tell teens that “freedom equals responsibility,” meaning that one needs to demonstrate responsible behavior before expecting to have certain freedoms. For example, if I am to have the freedom of driving a car, I need to demonstrate that I am responsible enough to follow traffic laws, have my driver’s license, car insurance, etc. Parents and teens often experience a push/pull in their relationships when deciding what freedoms are appropriate for the teens to have, which can create a lot of stress within the family system. The fact a teen is motivated to push for more freedom and independence and the parent’s task is to guide and protect the teen means there is often discord. This is a normal part of the process of transitioning from adolescence to adulthood. The transition is a period of regular readjustment and can intensify conflict between parents and teens. Parents are responsible for instilling values in their children about what is right and what is wrong. Given that teens often feel a sense of entitlement to make their own decisions about issues that impact their lives, it is important for parents to have clarity about the contexts in which they will exercise their authority and in which contexts they will allow more freedom. While teens undoubtedly will make mistakes, parents need to trust them to make some of their own decisions and to learn from their missteps. There is no way for parents to know for certain if their teen is going to make the wrong choices. The chances of a teen making the right choice are increased when parents believe in the teen’s ability to do so. That said, trust must be earned and in order to earn trust, teens must act responsibly. In order for teens to grow up, they need to have the opportunity to experience the freedom of making their own decisions (age appropriate) and the opportunity to learn from mistakes. When parents place a certain level of trust in their teen, the teen will be more likely to respect the parents as well as their rules. So What Age Can I Leave Home Or Get Married ? In the United States, the age at which you can legally leave home or get married varies significantly by state and depends on specific circumstances. Leaving Home: There is no universal legal age to leave home in the U.S. Most states set the age of majority at 18,meaning you are legally considered an adult at that age and can live independently without parental consent. However, many young people move out earlier, often at 18 to start college or work, or later if they choose to stay with their parents. You can legally move out at 16 if you are legally emancipated through a court order, by joining the military, or by getting married. Emancipation grants you legal independence from your parents, allowing you to make decisions about your own life, including where to live. If you are not emancipated, you generally need your parents' consent to live on your own or with a friend or relative. Being free to make your own choices. Being free to experience your own life. The right to liberty is the right to be who you are. Also your right to liberty to become who you choose to become. The right to think what you choose to think. The right to feel what you choose to feel. Your right to liberty is your right to choose what you consent to and what you withhold your consent from. To be without the right to liberty is to deny the truth that you are free to live your life. That you are free to choose. That you are free to feel what you feel. Liberty is choosing your destination or outcome. It comes from choosing and doing the right actions. The key to understanding and experiencing liberty lies in choosing the outcome we want versus receiving the outcome our path dictates. To choose liberty is to choose to stand up for Truth and Righteousness. What is the pursuit of Happiness? Happiness is the openness within your heart that allows you to feel a sense of oneness, freedom, gratitude, and joy. Secondly, the pursuit of Happiness is the attempt to attain and maintain that state of open-heartedness. The right to pursue happiness is the right to open your heart as you choose. It is the right to love as you choose. Also, the right to love your freedom or to love your life. What is the value of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness? The valuing of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are the values of humanity. Also the respect for humility and harmony. Humanity is the collective human experience, the aspect of being a human being. To value humanity is to value being human more than abstractions, more than money, fame, or power. Secondly to value humanity is to value the reality of our lives. Also, our liberties, and our pursuit of happiness, are complete with their ups and downs, twists and turns. Humility is the grounded Ness of our existence, the balancing of the highs with the lows of existence. To value humility is to value the ground on which we stand just as much as the stars above. To value humility is to value the frailty and limitations of our human existence. Also valuing our fumbles, flaws, and failures as essential parts of the great play of life. Harmony is the cooperative coming together of life in action. To value harmony is to value the beauty of consonance over dissonance. To value harmony is to value the synergy of collective action, and the immensity of the orchestral symphony. Also, the unity available in diversity, allows the whole to be far greater than the sum of its parts. Now more than ever, we as Americans must affirm the values of humanity, humility, and harmony. We must affirm the truths of our human shared reality rather than the falsehoods, fiction, and illusions that reside in our stories. We must affirm that, yes our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are unalienable, unassailable, and unbreakable. But, this time, let’s not feign exclusivity. This time, let’s include all of us. This time, let’s embrace life, liberty, and happiness for all because they are not just our rights, they belong to everyone. We’ve defined Freedom as the capability of choosing an action. Choosing liberty results in experiencing the ultimate level of freedom. This life is a time for us to be “tried, to be tested, or to choose.” Our decisions determine our destiny. Those who choose liberty will forever have happiness. Islamic schism The killing of Hussein was an event that led to the split in Islam into two main sects - Sunnis and Shias. In early Islamic history the Shia were a political faction (known as the "party of Ali") that supported Ali, son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad and the fourth caliph (temporal and spiritual ruler) of the Muslim community. The great schism between Sunnis and Shias occurred when Imam Ali did not succeed as leader of the Islamic community at the death of the Prophet. Ali was murdered in AD 661 and his chief opponent Muawiya became caliph. Caliph Muawiya was later succeeded by his son Yazid, but Ali's son Hussein refused to accept his legitimacy and fighting between the two resulted. Hussein and his followers were massacred in battle at Karbala. Some beat their backs to a drumbeat using chains or blades, while others beat their heads with a sword until blood drenches their faces and white 'mourning robes'. Karbala and other cities hosted reenactments of what Shi'ites refer to as Hussein's martyrdom, complete with horseback warriors and the annual 'mud rubbing' ceremony took place in Khorramabad, southern Iran. Hundreds of men and women jumped into vats of wet mud before standing by huge bonfires lit in the middle of the streets to dry it on their skin and clothes. 'Mud Rubbing' is a traditional ceremony that is held in the city of Khorramabad every year to commemorate the Ashura day. The Day of Ashura - which is the tenth day of the 'mourning month' of Muharram has been marred by attacks targetting Shi'ite Muslims in the past and Iraq deployed tens of thousands of security forces across the country this year. Qais Khalaf Rahima, a senior army commander, said yesterday: 'Our forces have set up a security plan that includes more than 20,000 members of the security forces.' They formed three concentric security rings around Karbala, banned traffic in the city centre three days ago and used special explosive detection equipment. The measures were aimed at reducing the risk of suicide bomb attacks by ISIS, who claim to be a Sunni group although governments of the world have rejected that they represent Islam. The UK and most Western countries are heading towards atheism or agnosticism. Christianism is fading out. Islam is growing to become the first religion in various European countries. The bottom line will probably look like 80% atheist/agnostic, 15% Muslim, 5% Christian. One has to account for falling demographics along with loss of faith amongst immigrants. So no matter what the alarmists may say, European countries are unlikely to become majority Muslim albeit an increased influence. Muslims are generally more engaged with their religion than Christians, which makes them more visible. That said, historical Churches are numerous and exist in every village and town. Massive urbanization in the last century has not been followed by Church building due to the influence of atheistic ideologies. As a result, Churches in provincial towns and villages are mostly empty or mostly attract old people. Nearly every village in the UK has it’s own church and you can tell by their design when they were built. Many date from Saxon times. The church used to be the centre of the community where people met for mass at least once a day. The followers of Islam will have to engage on a massive building project to build more mosques than the current number of Christian churches in the UK. As a Christian I have to agree with much of Sherif’s answer. The mosque is very much the centre of the Islamic community and includes a diverse sphere of activities other than the prayer hall. There are kitchens to feed the community and their guests. There are libraries where religious texts from the three Abrahamic religions can be studied. Similar functions are undertaken in Christian churches . I’m afraid my knowledge of the functions of Jewish churches is limited so it would be wrong to comment. However what little I do know tends to suggest a similar function It’s always a source of sorrow to me that essentially Judasim, Islam, and Christianity stem from the same source and yet decide to fight each other. It may be that you have heard that there are more new mosques than churches. This could be true because the vast majority of our churches are old. Many of them are hundreds of years old. Some of them are 1000 years old. We already have so many churches that are perfectly good that we don't need to build any more. I actually went in three different ones yesterday and I can assure you that they are an integral part of our heritage. In contrast our Muslim community is much smaller and newer and they are building mosques. However there are nowhere near the same number of mosques as there are Christian churches. Estimates suggest that over 20,000 churches have been sold and converted to private homes in the UK. The simplest way to live in a converted church is to wait until a suitable property comes up for sale. I suspect the question comes from a dubious YouTube video that claimed that London has closed 500 churches and opened 423 new mosques. The video has over 180,000 views. The figure for churches closing is based on how many were turned into homes in the capital between 2001 and 2006, rather than how many closed in that time. The best estimates show there was a net increase of around 800 between 2005 and 2015. The video doesn’t reference a time period over which it claims 423 “new” mosques were opened. Using the widest definition of a mosque, there are probably more than the video claims. At the time of writing, there were an estimated 478 in London, but we don’t have details on when each was opened.
