Spiritual Warfare

” Do not stumble!’ This was the apostle Paul’s exhortation to his readers in order to complete the Christian race. Unlike the competitors of Paul’s day we are not seeking the fleeting glory of a crown that withers. Rather, we are to run our best race with discipline and self-control. Why? So we can seize the prize — a crown that is imperishable. The prize for the overcomer, the one who was victorious, is to inherit eternal life and sit with Christ when he returns. So what could make you stumble, and keep you from conquering?

Are We Prepared for Battle? Our spiritual enemy is powerful and relentless, so scripture tells us that we need to gird our loins with truth. Jesus having done battle with the Adversary, knew we needed to stay alert and be prepared. In his final prayer before his crucifixion, Jesus asked the Father to protect the disciples from the evil one. They had to live in a world under the sway of this enemy, but they would not belong to his world. They were a part of the Father’s Kingdom and could rely on his help to do spiritual battle. Jesus in his example prayer reminded us to pray that the Father would rescue us from the evil one, the Father would not fail to do his part. Christ left his disciples with a message of warning to watch and pray so they would not give into life's temptations. James reminded his readers that temptation and testing was a vital part of the believer's walk. For it was through testing that we were to build faith and develop endurance. The story of Israel's Exodus and journey through the wilderness was one of failing to resist the temptations they faced. Paul used their example to encourage the brethren to be faithful in facing the tests and temptations that were part of living in Corinth, a city known for its licentious idolatrous culture. Paul wanted people to consider the lessons to be garnered from the lives of the Israelites in the wilderness, as well as, Achan, Samson, David and others who succumbed to temptations and brought great misery on themselves and others. We all face temptations prompted by personal desires or the pressures of adversity. No generation has been exempt from the temptations that John summarized as the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. The good news is that God provides the way out of every temptation. He has the answer and the antidote for the temptations that could lead us into sins that undermine our relationship with Christ and our Father. Consider the biblical stories of those who were tempted and tested and the outcome of their trials. The book of Job provides us insight into the nature of the tempter, and what it takes to resist temptation. Zechariah's account of Jeshua the priest once again casts Satan in his role as tempter and accuser of God's people, but there is deliverance. The account of Jesus' encounter with Satan, reinforces our understanding that Jesus was indeed tempted and tested as every human being, but he did not sin. Jesus did not give into the temptation, rather he passed the test. So what qualities and attitudes will help us when facing temptation or testing? God's purpose is to prove the authenticity of our faith and our loyalty and commitment to him. The apostle Paul wrote that temptation was something common to all human experience. But that it could be resisted by those who put their trust in God. He would faithfully provide the help needed to endure without yielding to temptation. Interestingly, Paul tied resisting temptation into the concept of fleeing from idolatry. This can be understood in its broadest sense when we realize that anything that is more important to us than God and his way is an 'idol.' Jesus had enemies, those who hated his message and denied his authority to speak for God. And those who follow in Jesus' footsteps as his disciples will also need to deal with enemies. Yet, ultimately, Jesus, the Lord of Lords, will return and when he does his adversaries will attempt to fight against him. But the Lord of Hosts will defeat those who hate him and remain hostile to his way of life. The Lord will destroy all of his enemies, but this is only the final chapter in a long history. So what about now? And what about us? What should our attitude and approach be when it comes to our adversaries? The scriptures provide ample guidance. The prophet Isaiah gives us hope beyond the present adversity and a vision of the future when the Lord of Lords will reign in justice and truth. Meanwhile, we need to look to the scripture to understand God's view on persevering through times of adversity. God did not promise his followers a life of ease, but rather he gives us the hope of the strength and wisdom to make good decisions in times of trouble. Jesus' Olivet prophecy, and his instructions to his disciples provide a snapshot of the kind of trouble we will need to face. But God also provides hope and encouragement for the present and promises of a bright future for those who trust in him.
