The Outer Limits is a seminal American science fiction anthology series that premiered on September 16, 1963, on ABC. Created by Leslie Stevens and produced by Joseph Stefano, the show is celebrated for its eerie atmosphere, philosophical depth, and groundbreaking special effects for its time.
The "Control Voice": Every episode begins with a famous narration by Vic Perrin: "There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission".
Anthology Format: Each hour-long episode features a self-contained story, often focusing on a "bear"—a creature or monster used to provide suspense and a central focus for the plot.
Atmospheric Style: Unlike its contemporary, The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits leaned more into "hard" science fiction and utilized film noir lighting and German Expressionism to create a moody, textured look.
Episodes: The original series ran for two seasons with a total of 49 episodes before being canceled in January 1965.
Notable Contributors: Writers included Harlan Ellison ("Demon with a Glass Hand") and Robert Towne. Stars such as William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Martin Sheen, and Robert Duvall appeared in early roles.

1963 The Outer Limits S01E03 The Architects of Fear
MemoryCryptofCastleHillsI was born in 1964, so, I did not see the original run of The Outer Limits. But, in 1979 we got cable TV and it opened up a whole new world to me. We got to catch the re-runs of shows like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. Here is the most controversial episode... "The Architects of Fear" is an episode of the original The Outer Limits television show. It first aired on September 30, 1963, during the first season. Certain that the Cold War will lead to mankind's destruction, a cabal of scientists decide that they must act to save the world. A film of a nuclear missile attack with people running for shelter is shown before the plot. Is this the day? Is this the beginning of the end? There is no time to wonder. No time to ask why is it happening, why is it finally happening. There is time only for fear, for the piercing pain of panic. Do we pray? Or do we merely run now and pray later? Will there be a later? Or is this the day? CENSORSHIP: The prosthetic suit for the monstrously altered Allen Leighton was judged by some of ABC's local affiliates to be so frightening that they broadcast a black screen during the Thetan's appearances, effectively censoring most of the show's last act. In other parts of the United States, the Thetan footage was tape-delayed until after the 11pm/10c news. In others, it was not shown at all. Unlike today, when film series are transferred to videotape for transmission, even until the mid-1980s, film series were broadcast live from the film print via telecine. The sequence involving the Thetan's encounter with the duck hunters was shot at the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Backlot #3.87 views -
