Mario has become prominent in popular culture, and Super Mario Bros. began a multimedia franchise including a long-running game series, an animated television series, a Japanese anime feature film, a live-action feature film and an animated feature film.

Super Mario Bros. 2 is a 1988 video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System. After the smash hit Super Mario Bros. in 1985, Nintendo quickly released a minor adaptation of the original with advanced difficulty titled Super Mario Bros. 2, for its mature market in Japan in 1986. The characters, enemies, and themes in Doki Doki Panic have the mascots and theme of the festival, and were adapted into the Super Mario theme to make a Western Super Mario Bros. sequel. Super Mario Bros. 2 was a resounding success, becoming the fifth-best-selling game on the NES, and was critically well-received for its design aspects and for differentiating the Super Mario series.

Super Mario Bros. 3 introduced iconic features like the world map, unique power-ups such as the Tanooki Suit, and the Koopalings as bosses. It was the first game to feature the enemy Boo and allowed Mario to slide. The game was a massive commercial success, selling over 17 million copies on the NES alone and becoming one of the best-selling games of all time.

Batman: The Video Game is a 1989 action platformer for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), developed and published by Sunsoft. Though it is based on the 1989 Tim Burton film, the game takes significant creative liberties, featuring a much more futuristic and less faithful representation of the movie's events. Battletoads is a 1991 video game developed by Rare and published by Tradewest for the Nintendo Entertainment System and is the first installment of the Battletoads series. In the game, three space humanoid warrior toads form a group known as the Battletoads. Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos is the 1990 sequel to the popular Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) video game. Following up on the original game's success, the sequel brings back the cinematic cutscenes and adds new mechanics, such as the ability to create "Shadow Clones" that mimic your movements to multiply your attack power. Like the SNES Star Fox game before it, Star Fox 64 has been deemed one of the greatest video games of all time.
