Obelisks in Rome, who, why, and when placed them here? The eternal city features as many as thirteen of these mysterious, ancient monoliths, including 8 Egyptian ones! Although some were brought to Rome by most known emperors like Octavian Augustus, Caligula, or Constantius II, there are a few made by Romans themselves. The most powerful people in Rome, first the Roman emperors and later popes knew that the ancient obelisks, incredibly heavy, but at the same time slender and sublime as if touching the sun-rays, conveyed powerful, originally ancient Egyptian symbolism: the infinite might of the rulers and their close relation with divine.
