Spanish police have recovered hundreds of archaeological artifacts, including marine fossils, Bronze Age ceramics and 18th-century weapons, from two houses in the southeastern province of Alicante. More than 200 human bone fragments, some of which are between 4,000 and 5,000 years old, were also seized from the homes, the Spanish Civil Guard said in a statement Friday. The discovery follows a weeks-long investigation, known as Operation Osarium, that led police to what they called "one of the largest illegal private collections" in Alicante. Two men are currently under investigation for the misappropriation of goods with artistic, historical, cultural or scientific value, the statement added. Roman mosaic tiles, paleolithic flint tools and historical weaponry, including cannonballs and an iron grenade, were among the 350 archaeological artifacts recovered. Spain's assisted suicide law is in the spotlight after doctors allowed the death of a former security guard who faced trial for having allegedly stormed his former workplace a year ago, shooting and wounding three people and later a police officer. Eugen Sabau, known in Spain as “the Tarragona gunman,” applied for euthanasia in June, six months after he was left with quadriplegia when police subdued him in a shootout following the attack Dec. 14 in the northeastern city. ABC News reports. Courts allowed the man's assisted death after rejecting several appeals by his victims, who argued he should face justice. Some 300 firefighters spent a difficult night battling a huge wildfire in southeastern Spain that has burnt through nearly 10,000 hectares in an area notoriously difficult to access, officials said Tuesday. The fire began when lightning hit the Vall de Ebo area in the province of Alicante late Saturday and has since spread rapidly, fuelled by strong winds, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,000 people, Valencia's regional government said. Regional interior minister Gabriela Bravo told Antena 3 television some 300 firefighters were battling the flames, backed by 24 planes and helicopters. Further north, firefighters in the Aragon region were battling another major blaze that broke out Saturday and has burnt more than 6,000 hectares of land, forcing at least 1,500 people from their homes. Spanish police have dismantled one of the world’s largest cocaine trafficking networks, seizing 10 tons of the drug and arresting five suspects in a joint operation with Colombian authorities. Three arrests were made in Spain and two in Colombia during seven raids, though officials did not disclose exact locations or where the drugs were found. The network reportedly smuggled around 120 tons of cocaine annually from Colombia to Europe via ports in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Spain, and had ties to Colombia’s Clan del Golfo criminal group. The traffickers used shell companies, frontmen, and complex smuggling schemes, with leaders coordinating operations from Colombia, Spain, and Dubai, DPA International has reported.
