Huge southern screamers show how they got their name
WildCreaturesSouthern screamers are one of the largest birds in South America. Almost 1m (3 feet) tall, they have a massive wingspan of 1.5m (4.5 feet). They resemble prehistoric creatures with their head plumage and huge feet. This mating pair were found in the wetlands of the Pantanal in Brazil. When full-grown, they have few predators able to take them down. They roam the grassy areas in search of food, but they are excellent fliers and capable swimmers. They graze like geese and scratch for food like chickens. These birds typically mate for life, engaging in calling rituals as seen here. Their shrill cries can be heard at a distance of 3km (2 miles). Aptly referred to as screaming, these birds make excellent guards with their loud alarm calls.1.02K views 4 comments -
Majestic giraffes peacefully eating on the African plain are a sight to behold
WildCreaturesThe giraffe is one of the most beautiful and majestic animals on earth. It holds the title as the tallest terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant on the planet. It's long neck and striking pattern make it instantly recognized. Giraffes reach a height of 5.7 m (18.7 ft). Fully grown females reach a weight of 1,192 kg (2,628 lb) Females are slightly smaller. Giraffes hold several titles including being the animal with the longest tongue and the strongest tongue. Giraffes have uniquely adapted skull bones to allow them to bend their head back so they can access leaves directly above them. When drought strikes a region, the giraffe has very little competition as it easily reaches the highest foliage. But researchers believe that there is also a possibility that the giraffes with the longest necks require more nutrients than their counterparts, placing them at a disadvantage. The bone structure in a giraffe's head even gives them a very powerful weapon. The bony horns on the top of their head is used in combat with other giraffes to establish dominance. It is also used to deliver extremely powerful blows to predators such as lions and hyenas. With their long neck, they can swing their head like a club. Giraffes are fast runners, being able to maintain speeds of 50km/h (31mph) over great distances and up to 60km/h (37mph) for shorter sprints. This allows them to outrun many predators. A giraffe has a very large heart in comparison with other animals. It also possesses extremely strong esophageal muscles to allow food to pass back up to the mouth for rumination. Giraffes are truly a marvel of nature and a sight to behold. These magnificent animals are part of a wild herd in Kenya, Africa. A close look at a giraffe casually eating in the wild is something that will never be forgotten.651 views 1 comment -
Gopher hits the snooze button and goes back to sleep in the sunshine
WildCreaturesThis groundhog is just too cute! He comes out of his burrow in the morning to look around and he finds a strange object sitting right in front of the entrance. Curiously, he decides to have a sniff. Sensing that it's nothing that will do him any harm, he decides to get tucked in at the den entrance and have a little more of a snooze. It's almost as if he pushed a snooze button on an alarm clock before having another 10 minutes to doze in the sunshine.25.8K views 8 comments -
Freaky giant Mola Mola fish come to inspect scuba divers
WildCreaturesMola mola are fascinating and bizarre giants of the ocean, yet we know very little about them. They are one of the most elusive and mysterious of the ocean's creatures. They spend most of their time at depths where there is less light and less food. For scuba divers, venturing below 30m (100 feet) comes with complications and the time that they are able to spend at these depths is limited. Mola mola are very shy creatures and it is difficult for people to see these fish in their natural environment. Also called ocean sunfish, they have many names. People refer to them as "nature's mistake" and "the fish that shouldn't be". Their structure looks like a giant head with two fins. In truth, mola mola have a head and a body, and although they do possess a tail, it has evolved to become almost non functional. They are extremely clumsy looking animals and generally very slow moving. Mola mola drift slowly on the current, although they can actually swim at slow speeds to move throughout the day. They are also capable of impressive speeds for very short distances to avoid predators. Small Mola Mola are often prey to a variety of sharks, tuna, sea lions, and many types of large fish, but once they reach full size, their thick skin makes them difficult to eat. Mola Mola can reach a size of 3.3m (more than 10 feet) in length and a mass of more than 2300kg (5,000lbs). Once they reach this size, only orcas, large sharks, and sea lions pose a threat to them. They are also capable of diving deep to avoid predators. The Mola Mola preys on small fish, fish eggs, squid, and other small marine life. They often seek food at deeper temperatures which causes them to lose a significant amount of body heat. It is believed that this why they can often be seen lying flat on the surface, basking in the sun. Mola Mola lay more eggs than any other fish, with a mature female laying as many as 300,000,000 at one time. These fish are a rare sight for scuba divers and these divers were thrilled to be swimming among a group of these strange animals that seemed curious about their presence. These fish were found swimming around the remote islands of the Galapagos.3.31K views 4 comments -

Scrawled filefish are beautiful and bizarre
WildCreaturesA school of scrawled filefish make their way over the coral reef in Mexico. They are ornate fish with a flat profile and a large fan tail. They are capable of changing colour to mimic their surroundings and hide from predators. Scrawled filefish feed on algae, seagrass, hydrozoans, gorgonians (soft corals) , colonial anemones, and tunicates. Their mouth is bizarrely shaped, at the end of a pointed snout.5.15K views 4 comments -
Strange and beautiful spotted eagle ray overturns rocks for food
WildCreaturesSpotted eagle rays are beautiful stingrays with very distinctive heads and ornate markings. For any scuba diver or snorkeler, they are a treat to see in the ocean. Usually shy and reclusive, watching one eating is a rare sight. This eagle ray seemed to be unconcerned with nearby scuba divers who kept a respectful distance and watched it in action. Eagle rays use their electro sensory organs in their snout to detect crustaceans and mollusks buried beneath the sand and rocks. They inhale the animals and the sand and then expel the sand out through their gills. They are capable of crushing thick shells in their mouth in order to get at the creature within. Eagle rays are highly intelligent, and occasionally curious about humans who approach slowly or wait patiently for the eagle ray to approach. This ray is hunting for mollusks or crabs under the lava rocks in the Galapagos Islands. The ray has a distinctive tail injury that makes it easily recognizable. It has been seen in these waters for several years, swimming gracefully on the strong currents that flow through the islands.1.68K views 2 comments -
Giant mantas surround thrilled divers in Galapagos Islands
WildCreaturesGiant mantas are incredible creatures. With a wingspan of more than 5m (16 feet), they inspire awe in anyone who sees one close up. These lucky scuba divers found themselves in the middle of hundreds of them in a sheltered bay in the Galapagos Islands. The mantas were looping and rolling, a behaviour that is believed to be part of courtship. Highly intelligent and curious animals, they will occasionally allow scuba divers to approach and observe them close up. In some cases, mantas will even come close and inspect the divers with curiosity. A close look at such beautiful animals is an unforgettable experience.3.32K views 7 comments
