Sonny Crockett, an undercover cop with the Miami Vice Squad, and Ricardo Tubbs, a New York cop, work together to catch a Colombian cocaine dealer in the pilot episode of Miami Vice, a series from MCA TV International. Written by executive producer Anthony Yerkovich and directed by Thomas Carter. Sonny Crockett is an undercover cop with the Miami Vice Squad who is separated from his wife and rarely sees his six-year-old son, Billy. He lives on a yacht with his alligator, Elvis. Moored alongside his yacht, which is a cover for his police work, is a speedboat that is much faster than those used by the coast guard. Ricardo Tubbs is a New York street cop who has come to Miami on a personal mission to avenge the death of his brother, who was also a cop. He pretends to be a Jamaican who wants to buy cocaine with counterfeit money. Sonny and Ricardo, much to their chagrin, have to work together to apprehend Calderone, a cocaine dealer. Due to a leak from within the department, all their attempts fail. First, Crockett's partner dies in an explosion, and then someone kills Leon Jefferson, Calderone's middleman, to prevent him from talking to the police. He pretends to be a Jamaican who wants to buy cocaine with counterfeit money. Sonny and Ricardo, much to their chagrin, have to work together to apprehend Calderone, a cocaine dealer. Due to a leak from the department, all their attempts fail. First, Crockett's partner dies in an explosion, and then someone kills Leon Jefferson, Calderone's middleman, to prevent him from talking to the police. Ricardo is almost killed when another of Calderone's middlemen, Trini de Soto, discovers who he really is. Crockett discovers that a former partner of his whom he cares about deeply, Scott Wheeler, is the informant. Stunned, Crockett forces Scott to tell him where a drug shipment is going to be unloaded. Crockett and Tubbs go to the dock and confront Calderone and his men. There is a shootout and Tubbs manages to arrest Calderone. The next day, they go to the jail to transfer Calderone to a maximum security prison, but find that the judge has released him after he posted $2 million bail. They head to the place where they believe Calderone is going to take a seaplane to escape, but they only arrive in time to see it take off. The experience ends up bringing Crockett and Tubbs together, and they form a top-notch police duo.

Crockett and Tubbs buy pornographic material from Jimmy, a shady character who directs porn films, hoping to get to his boss, Al Margolis. They soon discover that the government is after Margolis for bribery, murder, pornography trafficking, and corruption of minors. Crockett investigates Artie Rollins, Margolis's assistant, and discovers he's an FBI agent embedded in the scheme. However, the FBI is convinced their man has turned against them. Crockett and Tubbs manage to reach Artie and pose as the owners of a theater chain interested in buying large quantities of pornographic films. Crockett notices that Artie has gone too far. He's distant and too immersed in his role. Artie tells them he knows they're cops. He claims to have evidence to take down Margolis and promises to call them that very night to have him arrested. Back at the precinct, Gina and Trudy tell Crockett that Artie is rumored to be planning to move to Mexico with Margolis. Rodriguez orders Crockett and Tubbs to arrest him immediately. They find his apartment empty and are about to give up when Artie calls them to arrange a meeting. Rodriguez plants a wire on Tubbs to monitor the exchange. During the money exchange, Margolis points a gun at the two officers. Rodriguez realizes they've been set up and gives chase, but the limousine they're in manages to lose him. Margolis hands the gun to Artie and asks him to do the honors, but instead of firing, Artie passes another gun to Crockett, and they both open fire. After Margolis's arrest, Artie has a very intense meeting with the FBI. Shortly afterward, Crockett and Tubbs learn that Artie has committed suicide.

Crockett and Tubbs relieve two rookie undercover cops, Bobby and Jake, in the surveillance operation of a small drug sale. However, several men suddenly appear in a van, steal the drugs, open fire, and flee. Crockett and Tubbs lose track of the van, but manage to arrest Noogie Lamont for selling stolen goods. They return to the police station, where ballistics confirm that the automatic weapons used in the shootout are the same ones used in the robbery of a drug stash in which there were no survivors. In the midst of all this, Crockett receives divorce papers from his wife, Caroline, who wants to move to Atlanta with their son. Tubbs tells Crockett that a preliminary meeting between Bobby, Jake, and their contact has ended with Bobby dead and Jake seriously injured. At the police station, Rodriguez, Tubbs, and Crockett listen to Jake's recording of the shooting. In exchange for his freedom, Noogie Lamont arranges a meeting between Crockett, Tubbs, and the middleman, Desmond Maxwell. They offer Maxwell $300,000 in cash for a sale; Crockett gives him Lamont's address and tells him that the exchange will take place there. Rodriguez informs them that homicide has arrested one of the Haitians who was in the van. At the same time, they receive an edited copy of Jake's recording in which the men are identified as three Jamaicans driving a red Eldorado. They realize they have the wrong man and head to Noogie's apartment with the special operations team. A shootout ensues and Crockett and Tubbs free Noogie. That night they go to the hospital to visit Jake, who is recovering.

The murder of drug dealer Felix Castranova by an Argentinian hitman leads Tubbs and Rodriguez to a list of intended victims that includes Sonny's name. Meanwhile, Sonny and Caroline decide to halt their divorce proceedings after realizing they still love each other. Rodriguez believes the Crockett family is in danger and places all three of them under protective custody. As Sonny packs his bags on the boat, Rodriguez notices something shiny behind him. He lunges to protect Sonny and is shot in the chest. When Rudolpho Mendez's name surfaces in connection with Calderone, Crockett and Tubbs arrange a meeting with a small-time drug dealer, Linus Oliver. That night, they arrest Mendez, believing they have caught the killer. Crockett takes his family home, but senses something is wrong. He throws Caroline and Billy to the ground just before a machine gun begins firing overhead. The police have him surrounded, and the Argentinian tries to escape, but Tubbs and Crockett manage to take him down. Caroline, terrified, confronts Sonny, saying his lifestyle hasn't changed and that their relationship has to end once and for all. Then they receive the bad news that Lieutenant Rodriguez is dead and that Calderone is in the Bahamas. They decide to go after him.

Crockett and Tubbs interrogate Méndez to discover Calderone's whereabouts in the Bahamas. He tells them that Calderone uses the islands as a base for his operations in Miami. Calderone hired the hitman Ludivicio Armstrong to eliminate his problems and the competition—the same assassin who was after Crockett and who killed Lieutenant Rodríguez. They show Méndez a photo of Angelina Medera, a beautiful woman they suspect is Calderone's wife. Méndez eventually tells them that Armstrong was supposed to collect the second half of his pay at the Conch Bay Lodge on San Andrés Island under the alias Miller. Tubbs and Crockett go to the Bahamas, and Crockett checks into the hotel and questions the owner about Angelina. The owner tells him she is a teacher on the island. While Crockett goes to speak with the island's police, Tubbs meets Angelina on the beach. She is painting, and he introduces himself as an art dealer from New York. Meanwhile, posing as Miller, Crockett meets with Calderone's man to collect payment and demands an extra $30,000 for killing Crockett, insisting Calderone pay him in person. That same day, someone tries to kill the two detectives, who are certain Calderone knows their true identities thanks to the island's police. Tubbs visits Angelina, and they acknowledge their feelings for each other. The detective is shocked to learn she is Calderone's daughter and that she believes her father is a wealthy businessman. That evening, Crockett and Tubbs attend a costume party. Tubbs dances with Angelina while Calderone's men kidnap Crockett. Terrified, Tubbs reveals his true identity to Angelina and tells her the truth about her father. She leads him to her father. When they arrive, Calderone is about to kill Sonny, but Tubbs pulls a shotgun on him. Calderone's bodyguards fire, and Calderone is killed. Tubbs tries to apologize to Angelina, but she's devastated and wants nothing to do with him. The two police officers return home feeling a little empty.

Crockett and Tubbs are investigating Owens, a small-time bookie whose phone has been tapped and who has been fitted with a surveillance camera. While spying on him with binoculars, Tubbs sees a young woman enter Owens' office. Shortly after, Crockett sees one of Owens' henchmen mistreating the woman, and when she screams in terror, Crockett and Tubbs rush to help her. When the struggle ends, Barbara explains to Sonny that she has only been able to pay part of her accumulated gambling debt, and that someone has broken into her husband's workshop and stolen all the equipment and tools he needs to earn a living. Sonny promises to help Barbara and arranges a meeting with DeMarco, who is Lombard's right-hand man. Instead of returning the tools, he hands Sonny an envelope with eight thousand dollars. Sonny has fallen into a trap: he is accused of accepting bribes and his colleagues have to pay his bail. Later, Barbara disappears while trying to make another payment. She is found dead in the water, shot several times in the back of the head. Crockett is released from prison, and together with Tubbs, he devotes all his efforts to solving the case. They know they have to catch Lombard, the mastermind behind the Miami operation, but he slips through their fingers.

Sonny and Rico work undercover trying to locate Tony Amato, an international arms dealer. They monitor his every move, tap his phone, and bug his home, office, and even his car. Amato's wife, Rita, turns out to be a beautiful woman, but not the stunning, eye-catching type one would expect to see on Amato's arm. She is very shy and quiet. Crockett and Tubbs discover that Amato abuses her and that she has tried to leave him several times without success. When, thanks to their wiretaps, they discover that Amato is going to send his bodyguard to meet with a certain DuPass, a man he has never seen before, they intervene and replace DuPass with Tubbs. This allows him to negotiate directly with Amato, get his men to show him the merchandise he is offering, and seal a deal. Meanwhile, Rita has hired someone who, apparently, has to kill her husband. This time it is Crockett who shows up in her place and convinces a frightened Rita to cooperate with them and help them arrest Amato. Everything seems to be going according to plan, but at the last minute things go awry, especially when Rita, unhappy with a decision made by the FBI, decides to take justice into her own hands.

Crockett and Tubbs get involved in the world of offshore power boat racing and drug smuggling.

Crockett & Tubbs have to recover a witness in a major drug dealer's trial, who has ran off to the Everglades and must testify in 48 hours.

In court, Crockett refuses to identify an informant and spends more time in jail than the drug dealer he is trying to bust. Gina and Trudy infiltrate a prostitution ring. Gina is placed in a compromising position when they are suspicious that she is not a hooker.
