God our Healer

As our nations are awash once more in financial crisis relating to, In Wall Street-Speak, an 'asset liability mismatch' one wonders if there are any 'sound minds' in the financial sector. Some problems have rational, if not easy solutions, when you consider the wisdom of scripture to inform a sound-minded approach. We cannot avoid sowing what we have reaped, and now we are reaping what was sown. But facing major economic upheavals and social instability on the international scale and financial woes on a personal level, how do we have the sound mind that helps us discern a good path forward? Paul encourages us to leave behind the foolish and futile mindset of those who do not know God ,who are caught in wilful ignorance, whose reasoning is clouded, and who cannot make sound-minded decisions. Rather, Paul encourages believers to be renewed in their minds and to put on the mind of Christ. This is an ongoing process that continues as long as God's spirit works in us and we are listening to God's wisdom as revealed in the scriptures. It is the sound mind of Christ that will help us to have the balanced focus we need in times of turmoil. This message given at the beginning of the 'pandemic' is as meaningful now as it was then. And perhaps more so. Are we learning lessons from COVID-19? Our world is seemingly very fragile now, as stock markets, business, tourism, and education all react in panic to the declaration that COVID-19 is a pandemic. Finding Perfect Peace In a turbulent world with hostility and distress a part of the mainstream news diet, how does one find wellness? And yet, the Lord God’s promise is of perfect peace for those who trust in him. For he is God our Healer, and he knows the conditions required for wellness. Part of that peace comes in knowing what the future holds. For those who trust God and have his vision of the day when the Messiah will rule, there is joy and peace. But is God our refuge today? While living in Egypt the Israelites were subject to Pharaoh and his laws that produced slavery and death; there was cause and effect. In delivering the people from this bondage and way of life, God gave these ex-slaves a new body of laws that would produce good results. But only if they would listen carefully and do what was right. These commands were not only ‘do-able,’ but they were not difficult to obey, and they would demonstrate love for God and neighbour. And in following God’s instructions he gave them the promise, that they would no longer suffer from the illnesses that they had endured in Egypt. God’s ways would produce wellness. When Israel left Egypt, and entered the desert of Sinai one of the first challenges they faced was a lack of water. It was at the waters of Mara that God performed a miracle. By healing the water, God turn the bitter waters into fresh sweet water . God had tested them and many had responded with discontent and grumbling. But God was faithful and provided for his people. Paul used their example as an object lesson for all believers that we should to trust in God in times of trial. Then God gave his first ‘lesson’ to the nation of former Egyptian slaves. He gave them a promise if they would listen to him and do what was right! Then, God would not put on them any of the diseases they had suffered in Egypt. One of the great lessons of the Exodus was that God would provide. He would be their leader and guide to the promised land and he could be trusted to keep his promises. One of those promises was that the people would not suffer all the diseases of Egypt and its culture. But this would also be a test of the people and their willingness to follow God's guidance and obey his instructions. God's way allows for free will and the ability of individuals to make choices. God had provided the path for the people to walk and he promised to be with them, but they needed to embrace God's ways and walk with him. God reiterated that he was their healer, but God's first principle of wellness was what we would call 'preventative medicine.' There was no spiritual 'dualism' in God's approach, both the body and mind of those who walked with God were to become temples of the spirit of God. This message relating to physical health was also fundamental to the teachings of the church in Paul's day.
