Fuzzy Theology: Do You Know the Scriptures? A recent poll in the US showed that a majority of people believe in God and love the bible. But, most are “fuzzy” on the details. In fact, they often believe incongruent and conflicting things about the scriptures. Yet, the scriptures themselves claim to be the Word of God and the source of the truth, so if we believe God, then we believe that the scriptures must be consistent. So how do we avoid walking in the fog of a fuzzy theology, that is not grounded in the truth? We must avoid the “twitter” version of scriptures and do more than just listen to theological sound-bites. God is trying to teach, but who will listen? We must study God’s word with intent to eradicate fuzzy theology, and grasp the true reality found in the Word of God. The poll indicated that 64% of respondents thought God accepts all religions. But is this the truth? We must be careful to avoid thinking that God accepts any type of worship, and that it’s OK to “worship our way.” Do you know what the scriptures really say about the kind of worship God wants?

We are living in what some have called the era of "Post-truth Politics" - when people put their reliance on assertions that may "feel" true, but in reality have no basis in fact. As Christians however, we must consider Christ's words to the religious of his time who were also deaf to the truth, and had bought into the lies and half-truths of their society - those ideas that on the surface seemed plausible, but were in reality, spiritual darkness. It is only the truth that sets us free, and anything less than the truth results in bondage. So our choice becomes clear we must know the source of truth, "alethia" - reality, the way the universe really is - or we will default to a life based on illusion. So what is the power of truth? Sorting Truth from Error In a world of false messaging, and secular “gospels” that can’t help but produce dystopian outcomes, what does “labouring in the gospel” mean? Christians are called to “labour” in order to fight for godly values — Judeo-Christian values. Daniel prophesied of a world where the godless would rule. False teaching would predominate. Yet, at the same time, the spiritually attuned would need to be strong. They would need to take action to continue to teach the truth. In a time of moral relativism, half-truths, and outright deceptions, it requires persistence to continue to teach those who are still willing to listen to the gospel of truth.

Words Have Consequences “Be careful with your words,” is good advice to many who have found themselves in the midst of a war of words.There can be grave consequences to the careers of media personalities who misspeak in a very public way. And the average social media user can find themselves lambasted or ostracized for their words. But how important is what we say, when it comes to God’s point of view? Jesus, when confronted by the leaders of his day, had this to say, “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” What did he mean?

Our age is not unlike that of Jesus' time and he warned us to avoid the traps of the self-righteous. The 'Wokies' of today, like the Pharisees of Jesus' day, reject God's standards in favour of their own redefining of what is right or wrong. They have taken a 'holier-than-thou' self-righteous approach that has abandoned the faith and morality of scripture and is intolerant of anyone who does not accept their new orthodoxy. And yet, the scripture provides examples of Pharisees who took a stand rejecting the majority view and embracing the truth that Jesus' taught. How would Jesus react to the Woke leaders of western society? Would he point out their hypocrisy and deceitfulness? Would he criticize them for their self-seeking, self-serving lust for power and status? And what advice would Jesus give to his followers today so as to avoid stumbling into the traps of the proud and self-righteous? Paul in writing to Timothy warned against becoming one of those people who had once believed but had turned away from the faith because they had been misled by hypocritical religious leaders. Recently, a major 'Christian' denomination has moved from the doctrinal position of 'God does not bless sin' to a more politically acceptable stance of 'God does not turn away anyone." These are irreconcilable concepts. In fact, this antinomian reasoning seems to fall into the category of the 'way of Balaam' that Peter and John told believers to avoid. So what was Balaam's way and why is it still so destructive? What did that ancient soothsayer do and how is his example instructive to Christians who desire to walk with God? This story has a lot to say about understanding God's will, who is able to have a relationship with him and what must motivate our thought and action. Many Christians do not know what the scriptures say about what it means to love God or accomplish his will? They want to come to God, but they do not acknowledge the scriptures that reveal how we must love God, what it means to obey him, and under what conditions we are given the Holy Spirit that we might know God? Consider the witness of the apostles Matthew, John. It is challenging to navigate in our present world of extremes. But scriptures tell us there is a time and place for all things. Consider the lessons that we can derive from God's perspectives on the lives of Naboth and Ahab, or Gedaliah and Johanan. God counsels us to achieve an artful balance in all we do so we can have emotional and spiritual stability. Paul gives us godly advice about how to set our priorities so that we might live a temperate life that honours God and encourages others. Listen to his words of wisdom about self-mastery and moderation and be inspired in your walk with God.

War or Peace? Our world longs for peace and a way out of misery, suffering and death. But is the world willing to make the changes necessary to eradicate war and promote peace? Are there too many people in the world who love war and hate peace? Are there those whose conflicting passions, envy, selfishness and evil deeds make war the natural consequence? The Lord God, the Word of God, makes it clear that there is no peace for the wicked, it is merely a matter of cause and effect. The story of Jehu and his overthrow of Ahab's dynasty is a case in point. It is self-deception to think that idolatry, murder, and deceit can produce anything but conflict — war! Yet the scriptures give us more than warnings of future warfare it also give us hope of future peace. This vision of peace is taught from Genesis to Revelation and the prophecies of a future time of peace are promises made by the God who never lies and is ever-faithful. Do you know what the scripture teaches in regards to how peace will be achieved and the scourge of war will end? And have you considered how these prophecies are meant to impact our daily lives, giving us hope and providing us with wisdom to walk in peace now? Jesus said that a good tree would produce good fruit and a bad tree would produce bad fruit. When we consider the conflict between Hamas and the state of Israel, we realize it is a theological controversy. This controversy and the underlying anti-semitism has ancient roots and the tree has either produced good or bad fruit. But we will start to examine the story beginning with the history of the Roman world at the time of the Jewish revolts in the first and second century. We will briefly look at the causes of a rising anti-semitism in the state and a subsequent adoption of anti-semitic bias in the early Roman church. We will consider the question of why the early Roman church fathers forsook their Hebrew roots and developed a new 'Gentile Christianity.' Then we will examine the scriptures to determine God's attitude towards his people and how he dealt with them when they failed to live up to their covenant. God made and reiterated promises to his people, so we must ask whether the God we worship as Christians is a God who keeps his promises. Can we count on God to be good to his word?
