THE KISS (1929)Greta Garbo, Conrad Nagel & Anders Randolf | Drama, Romance | B&W | Golden Age Film
Lost n Found FilmsPlease visit our streaming service at https://lostnfoundfilms.uscreen.io/ The Kiss is a 1929 American synchronized sound drama film directed by Jacques Feyder, starring Greta Garbo, Conrad Nagel, and Lew Ayres in his first feature film. The film has no audible dialogue but featured a synchronized musical score and sound effects. The soundtrack was recorded using the Western Electric Sound System sound-on-film process. The soundtrack was also transferred to discs for those theatres that were wired with sound-on-disc sound systems. The film is based on a short story by George M. Saville, The Kiss bears the same title as the 1896 short that "shocked" the American public by being the first motion picture to depict a couple kissing. This 1929 production is notable for being the last major film released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) without dialogue and the final non-speaking performances by both Garbo and Conrad Nagel. Synopsis The story, set in 1929, takes place at the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon, France, where Irene Guarry (Greta Garbo) and André Dubail (Conrad Nagel) share a secret romance. Irene is unhappily married to her much older husband, Charles Guarry (Anders Randolf), a businessman on the brink of bankruptcy. Despite her love for André, Irene fears Charles's violent jealousy and is trapped in her loveless marriage. After a kiss at the museum, Irene resolves to never see André again. Charles hires a private investigator to follow Irene, who reports harmless activities, but Irene's love for André remains strong. At a formal dinner party, Irene and André meet briefly, confirming their love but agreeing their affair must end. Meanwhile, young Pierre Lassalle (Lew Ayres), the son of Charles' business associate, falls for Irene and confesses his feelings. The following day, after a tennis match, Pierre expresses his love for Irene, and she agrees to give him a photograph of herself. However, when Pierre visits to retrieve the photo, he presses for a kiss, which escalates into an assault. Charles catches them and brutally beats Pierre. In a desperate act to protect him, Irene kills Charles and stages the scene to make it look like a suicide due to financial despair. Irene is indicted for murder but defends herself, claiming Charles killed himself. André returns to defend her in court, and his heartfelt defense, along with testimony about Charles's financial troubles, leads to her acquittal. After the trial, Pierre arrogantly implies Irene killed Charles for him, but Irene reveals the truth to André. Despite her guilt, André reassures her of his love, and they embrace, sharing a kiss as three cleaning women enter the courtroom. THE SILENT CODE (1935) Kane Richmond, Blanche Mehaffey & J.P. McGowan | Drama, Western | B&W
Lost n Found FilmsThe Silent Code is a 1935 American Western film written by George Morgan and directed by Stuart Paton. It was the third of a scheduled six films in the "Morton of the Mounties" series, although this would be the last one made. The first two, Courage of the North and Timber Terrors starred John Preston in the title role. This film saw Kane Richmond take over the lead, co-starring with Blanche Mehaffey. SYNOPSIS Nothwest Mounted Police Corporal Jerry Hale is assigned to take over the district of a fellow-officer, and is puzzled as he had worked this district before and had been mysteriously transferred, disrupting his romance with Helen Brent, the niece of Peter Barkley, the Factor at the trading post. An accountant of the company Berkley works for threatens to expose him when his account is found $10,000 short. Barkley pleads for more time to raise the money. His opportunity arises when he learns that Helen's father and his brother-in-law, Nathan Brent, has struck it rich and is on his way to visit Helen. Barkley instructs his henchmen Carney and Breen to lie in wait and rob Brent of his gold. Brent has a premonition of trouble and buries his gold, making a map of the location. Barkley is disturbed by the arrival of Corporal Hale and goes to warn his men, and finds them already engaged in the attack on Brent. Brent's dog Wolfgang (played by a dog named Rex, or maybe the other way around) attacks Barkley who, in trying to shoot Wolfgang (or Rex) shoots Brent instead. Hale rushes toward the sound of the shot and the hidden Barkley watches the dying Brent give him the map. When the Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman Jerry Hale is sent to a remote outpost, he meets his old sweetheart, Helen Brent, who is living their with her uncle, Peter Barkley. Helen's father, Nathan, is off prospecting. As they renew their relationship, it becomes clear that the letters which Jerry has been sending to Helen have been intercepted and destroyed by Barkley. When her father returns from prospecting, he makes it known that he has a map to his gold strike. He moves into his cabin, but is killed by Lobo, one of Barkley's gang, who steals the map. During the attack, Lobo drops several Indian beads near Nathan's body. Barkley frames Jerry for the murder, and he is arrested and thrown in jail. While there, Helen visits him and vents her disgust with him, believing that he did kill her father. The beads which Lobo dropped during the murder are eventually tracked back to him, after which Helen helps Jerry escape, and he rides off to get help from the Mounties. He tells Helen to wait in her father's cabin. While there, Barkley stops by and is confronted by Helen. CRIMSON ROMANCE (1934) Ben Lyon, Sari Maritza & Erich Von Stroheim | Action, Drama, War | COLORIZED
Lost n Found FilmsCrimson Romance is a 1934 American drama film directed by David Howard and written by Milton Krims and Doris Schroeder. The film stars Ben Lyon, Sari Maritza, Erich von Stroheim, James Bush, William Bakewell and Hardie Albright. The low-budget project utilized footage from Hell's Angels (1930) and was released on October 12, 1934, by Mascot Pictures. SYNOPSIS After Fred von Bergen, a German immigrant in America, is forced from his job by anti-German hysteria before the Great War, he and his friend Bob Wilson leave America and join the German air force. In 1916, childhood best friends, Bob Wilson (Ben Lyon) and Fred von Bergen (James Bush), are test pilots working for an American company that builds bombers for the European allies. Since he is German-born and faces prejudice against his heritage, Fred loses his job and, unable to find other employment, decides to return to Germany to fight for his homeland. Although he has no special attachment to the German cause, Bob quits the aviation company and joins his friend in Germany. On their way to a German airfield, Red Cross nurse Alida Hoffman (Sari Maritza) accidentally runs Bob and Fred off the road, Both men are immediately drawn to Alida, especially Bob although Fred is more shy. After Bob's first unsuccessful mission, Captain Wolters (Erich von Stroheim), the squadron's tyrannical leader, expresses his doubt about his loyalty but, desperate for pilots, gives him another chance. As the United States is drawn into the war, instead of sending him into a crucial air battle, Wolters arrests Bob. Fred, heartbroken that Alida has chosen Bob, quarrels with his friend, calling him a coward. Later, however, Fred allows his friend to escape from a firing squad and flee to the Allied lines. To prove his allegiance, Bob leads British bombers to the German base, while Fred is told by Wolters that he must shoot down Bob to prove his loyalty. CAST & CREW Ben Lyon as Bob Wilson Sari Maritza as Alida Hoffman Erich von Stroheim as Capt. Lowe Produced by Nat Levine Cinematography Ernest Miller Edited by Doris Drought Production company Mascot Pictures Distributed by Mascot Pictures Release date October 12, 1934 Running time 71 minutes Country United States Language English NOTES Crimson Romance was a low budget production that relied on the large amount of footage that had been shot for Hell's Angels. The advantage of having Ben Lyon as the lead actor in both features allowed for intercutting between previously shot footage and new scenes that were shot at Wilson Airport in North Hollywood, California, owned by aviators Roy and Tave Wilson, the only airport that was exclusively devoted to film work. Lyon was filmed in a Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5 that had been seen in numerous films. Crimson Romance was only allotted a short period of time for new scenes to be shot, resulting in a frenzied production schedule. Lyon was constantly on demand for filming and complained that the production company wanted a "limousine for the price of a Model T." One unusual scene in Crimson Romance blended together footage of Lyon in a British fighter bearing down on a German bomber. The scene showing the bomber was from Hell's Angels. Lyon was also in the German aircraft, with the improbable scenario of Lyon shooting himself down. In his review for The New York Times, Frank Nugent, struggled with the unlikely choice of the film's title and its apparent romantic story, wrote: " There is more to 'Crimson Romance' ... It is the not always believable, but generally interesting, story of two friends, one an American, the other a German, who enlist in the German air force in 1916." #oldmovies #freemovies #action #drama #war #classicfilms #freemoviesonline #colorized #lostandfoundfilms337 views 1 comment -
