Dry eyes and night blindness are often caused by vitamin A deficiency. Vitamin A deficiency can be caused by a diet high in junk food or an issue with the gallbladder. Egg yolks, liver, butter, and cod liver oil are the best sources of vitamin A. Plants are not a good source of vitamin A because they only contain the precursor, beta-carotene. Zinc is essential for vitamin A to work properly in the body. Red meat, oysters, shellfish, and liver are the best sources of zinc. Retinopathy is often caused by diabetes. Excessive amounts of glucose can create oxidation in the nervous system. Benfotiamine, a fat-soluble form of vitamin B1, can penetrate nerve tissue. Consuming protein with sugar causes a chemical reaction called glycation, which can cause floaters in the eye. A low-carb or carnivore diet may help. Intermittent and prolonged fasting allow your body to recycle damaged proteins through autophagy and may help with floaters. Macular degeneration is often said to be age-related. However, blue light, alcohol, smoking, sugar, and seed oils may contribute to it. To improve eye health, try lowering your seed oil consumption and increasing your intake of omega-3 fats. Lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin are carotenoids that protect your eyes against macular degeneration. You can find these compounds in the following foods: • Green vegetables • Orange fruits and vegetables • Yellow fruits and vegetables • Egg yolks • Seafood (Salmon, shrimp) • Grass-fed meat Glaucoma is an eye condition in which excessive pressure causes damage to the back of the eye. Research has shown that vitamin D can be an excellent remedy for glaucoma. High amounts of vitamin D can also be beneficial for cataracts. N-acetyl-carnosine and zinc contain antioxidants that protect the eye and improve cataracts. Dark purple, red, orange, and yellow fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants that help support eye health. Waking up to pee, even just once, can wreck your sleep and wreak havoc on your health. Some of the consequences of poor sleep are as follows: • Slower metabolism • Increased cortisol • Increased risk of type 2 diabetes • Insulin resistance • Increased risk of high blood pressure • Decreased ability to detoxify the brain • Poor mood, anxiety, and depression • Decreased cognitive function, focus, and memory • Lower testosterone • Feeling tired all day Approximately 1 in 5 men and 1 in 4 women in the U.S. get up at least once or twice to urinate every night, and aging is not the problem! Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) plays a crucial role in preventing excessive urination. A problem with this hormone affects water balance, causing you to produce more urine, especially at night. Too much salt and not enough potassium, blood sugar issues, and insulin resistance all affect ADH and can cause you to produce more urine to eliminate excess salt and sugar. Other factors that affect ADH include: • Caffeine • Sugar/starch • Excess protein • Alcohol Vitamin B1 and magnesium are key nutrients involved with bladder control. If you’re dealing with nighttime urination and only a small volume of urine comes out, suspect a deficiency in one of these nutrients. Professor Hollis’ research has provided a new understanding of the importance of vitamin D and its full range of functions. Vitamin D has been understood as an essential nutrient for skeletal integrity and maintaining blood calcium levels. As microbiology and research developed, researchers found that many cells that had nothing to do with the skeleton could respond to vitamin D, including cancer and immune cells. Vitamin D exists in different forms inside the body. When you take a supplement or sunlight hits your skin, you’re dealing with the inactive form of vitamin D. It is then turned into a compound called 25-hydroxy vitamin D, the intermediate form of vitamin D that stays in the blood for weeks. This form is picked up in blood tests but isn’t easily accessible by the tissues that might need it. The final form of vitamin D is one of the most potent hormones, 125 di-hydroxy vitamin D. Vitamin D is converted into the active form in the kidney but can also be converted inside the cells. The vast majority of studies substantiating our information on vitamin D in the U.S. have several problems and have produced inaccurate results. There is also no agreed-upon range on “normal” vitamin D levels—or what levels are considered a vitamin D deficiency. Professor Hollis has conducted research and has seen significant results using vitamin D to prevent birth complications in women in Iran, in patients with low-grade prostate cancer, and in lactation. He also explains the importance of magnesium, a key cofactor for vitamin D metabolism. Professor Hollis wants people to understand that few physicians recommend or acknowledge the benefits of vitamin D because national organizations have yet to properly understand and recognize them.
