Oakley (3yr old) from never ridden to well started under saddle

Updated 5 months ago
Via this playlist you can see Oakley's training progress from never ridden to well started under saddle. MOST of the early training sessions are shown raw and uncut. Where there are gaps it is generally because those rides were done completely outside the arena - and I needed two hands on the reins - so no video was taken. ------
Oakley was 3 yrs old when his "well started under saddle" training was started - he had NEVER had even a small child on his back to that point. He spent a month in training the year prior as a 2yr old - learning to pony well and learning to be line driven - as well as general handling training like learning to stand unrestrained to have your hooves worked on by the farrier.

Oakley - Start Right!! First time with a person on his back - 2 May 2025
CountryJackGThis is raw and uncut of the entire session - from the time I walked out to catch Oakley to when the session ended about an hour and eleven minutes later. This was the first time a person ever got on Oakley's back. His owner did put a saddle on Oakley once. And Oakley spent a month in training with me last Summer as a 2yr old learning to be ponied and learning to be line driven. He logged 80 miles on roads and trails while here last Summer for a month. Training horses always involves some risk of injury (or even death) to the horse, the trainer, any spectators, equipment used, etc. - this risk is totally your own as you will be making your own judgements on what to do. As with any suggestions on any subject you must weigh them out for yourself and proceed accordingly - at your own risk. You can read my detailed description of my Start Right!! process on this webpage which also includes other videos https://griffes.tripod.com/startright.html Remember to intentionally, on purpose, learn of God each day by prayerfully reading, studying, and pondering upon God's word each day. Oakley - first time moving with a person on his back - 2 May 2025
CountryJackGThis was the second time with a rider on his back and the first time Oakley was asked to move calmly - first session was all about standing like a statue for mounting https://rumble.com/v6svref-oakley-start-right-first-time-with-a-person-on-his-back-2-may-2025.html . Oakley moved out of camera frame a couple times - sorry about that - I have no cameraman. And on occasion my longer range bluetooth microphone is having trouble getting a signal through my body - sorry about that as well. I think you may despite those technical difficulties be able to learn from observing and listening. Oakley - second ride ever - first ride under saddle - 3 May 2025
CountryJackGToday was Oakley's second ride ever and his first ride under saddle. The video is raw and unedited. Sorry if we got out of the camera frame at times - I do not have a cameraman. And hopefully my longer range bluetooth mic stayed connected. Oakley third ride - second under saddle 5 May 2025
CountryJackGThis is Oakley's third ride ever - his second ride under saddle - 5 May 2025. And this ride ended with a 0.6 mile trail ride around our woods which was Oakley's second solo trail ride under saddle. Yes, you read that correctly, his second solo trail ride under saddle after his second arena session under saddle. Training horses always involves some risk of injury (or even death) to the horse, the trainer, any spectators, equipment used, etc. - this risk is totally your own as you will be making your own judgements on what to do. Horses in the Village - 6 May 2025
CountryJackGRain had made our clay sod arena footing way too slippery so we took to the road on Tuesday 6 May 2025 to give the trainee horses additional experience with new to them sights and sounds and smells. Oakley the 3yr old Paint gelding was ponied off my helper horse Avi. Nutmeg was ridden solo. And our route included the fairly nearby Village in order to ensure the trainee horses saw things that were not familiar to them - in order to intentionally work on increasing their personal courage while simultaneously working on increasing their trust in their master (who is calmly exuding "Fear not, you are with me.") Training horses always involves some risk of injury (or even death) to the horse, the trainer, any spectators, equipment used, etc. - this risk is totally your own as you will be making your own judgements on what to do. Oakley - fifth ride - fourth under saddle 8 May 2025
CountryJackGThis is the arena session of Oakley's fifth ride ever which is his fourth ride under saddle. His fourth ride ever which was his third ride under saddle there is no video for because it was way too slick for clay sod arena work - so we exclusively did a trail ride. For this fifth ride which is Oakley's fourth ride under saddle we are again starting in the arena - then ending with a trail ride - this time a much longer solo trail ride which included 2.7 miles of road riding during which we met a couple kids riding bikes coming from the front and a couple cars/trucks passing us from behind. Via getting the horse out on trails and road as soon as they have basically manual steering and manual brakes they start gaining helpful experience which they cannot gain in the arena. It sounds to me as if something was awry with my bluetooth microphone. It sounds like it is somewhat working but somehow the phone mic is still active and seemingly primary because of how loud the chickens sound at times. Sorry about that technical issue. Training horses always involves some risk of injury (or even death) to the horse, the trainer, any spectators, equipment used, etc. - this risk is totally your own as you will be making your own judgements on what to do. Oakley - sixth ride - fifth under saddle 9 May 2025
CountryJackGThis is the sixth ride on Oakley - his fifth ride under saddle. He is getting more confident but was still not confident enough to offer up the canter when encouraged to go faster at a trot - that will come. Training horses always involves some risk of injury (or even death) to the horse, the trainer, any spectators, equipment used, etc. - this risk is totally your own as you will be making your own judgements on what to do. Oakley - seventh ride - sixth ride under saddle 12 May 2025
CountryJackGOakley's seventh ride which is his sixth ride under saddle. Oakley's confidence was high enough we got some cantering in both directions. Work continues on neck reining - which today he showed a bit of understanding about at a walk - that disappeared at a trot. We worked on the very basic lateral movements to control hips and shoulders. We did a bit of flag work on the ground and mounted. We backed. And after completing arena work we went on a 0.6 mile trail ride - some TrailCam photos from that ride are included at the end of the video. At this point in "starting well under saddle" training Oakley has logged 24.9 road and trail miles because I very firmly believe that in addition to solid foundational training it takes REAL miles actually going somewhere to make a good horse. Training horses always involves some risk of injury (or even death) to the horse, the trainer, any spectators, equipment used, etc. - this risk is totally your own as you will be making your own judgements on what to do. Oakley - eighth ride - seventh ride under saddle 14 May 2025
CountryJackGOn Oakley's eighth ride - seventh ride we worked on: stand like a statue for mounting AND await further direction; improving steering always applying neck rein; the most basic lateral movements; and backing. We walked and trotted but did not canter due to the clay sod appearing slick. I thought he might canter on the road where we had good footing but found that while he was trotting right along he was also right at the edge of his courage/confidence so that when I asked him to go faster he would slow down instead. He will get more confident as his experience increases. And my objective is to not push him to the point that he feels like an anti-predator response is needed - so I will keep building his confidence. Remember to intentionally, on purpose, learn of God each day by prayerfully reading, studying, and pondering upon God's word each day. Talk to God in prayer as your Heavenly Father who would like for you to be His friend. Find out what He would like you to do for Him as His friend and go and do it for Him as His friend. Oakley - ninth ride - eighth ride under saddle 15 May 2025
CountryJackGOn Oakley's ninth ride - eighth ride under saddle we had the opportunity to work with two other horses being ridden in the arena - one of them my personal horse, Avi, being ridden by my daughter-in-law - one of them a trainee horse, Nutmeg, being ridden by my youngest son who is putting a training session on Nutmeg - he used to help me train horses when he lived at home. Later in the session we work on passing and being passed at a trot. We went on a 3.8 mile trail and road ride after arena work. In addition to solid foundational training it takes REAL miles actually going somewhere to make a good horse.
