Gargoyles is a popular 1994 animated television series known for its dark tone, complex story arcs, and Shakespearean themes, which originally aired from October 24, 1994, to February 15, 1997. It has maintained a cult following and its storyline has continued in comic book form and is currently in development as a live-action series.
The series features a clan of gargoyles who, a millennium ago in medieval Scotland (994 A.D.), were betrayed by humans and cursed to remain frozen in stone form until their castle rose above the clouds. In 1994, a billionaire named David Xanatos purchases the castle and moves it atop his New York City skyscraper, which fulfills the condition of the spell and awakens the six remaining gargoyles. Led by their chieftain Goliath, they must adjust to the modern world and become the secret nighttime protectors of New York City, aided by a sympathetic NYPD detective named Elisa Maza.
istinctive Tone: The show was produced by Walt Disney Television Animation but was notable for a more mature and darker narrative than typical Disney afternoon cartoons, drawing comparisons to Batman: The Animated Series.
Voice Cast: It featured a high-profile voice cast, including many Star Trek alumni such as Marina Sirtis (Demona), Jonathan Frakes (David Xanatos), and Michael Dorn (Coldstone).
Cancellation: The first two seasons were critically successful, but the show moved to ABC for a third season, rebranded as The Goliath Chronicles, with significant changes in production and writing staff (series creator Greg Weisman was removed). This led to a decline in quality and viewership, and the series was canceled.
Continued Storyline: Weisman has continued the canonical storyline through comic book series published by Slave Labor Graphics (2006-2009) and currently by Dynamite Entertainment (since 2022), which ignore the third season of the TV show.
Modern Revival: All episodes of the original series are available to stream on Disney+. In October 2023, a live-action series reboot for Disney+ was announced to be in development. A remastered version of the 1995 Sega Genesis video game was also released in 2023.
Gargoyles is remembered as a cult classic, ahead of its time for its serialized storytelling and complex characters.
