Benson - TV Show - 1980's - Comedy

A spin off from the show "Soap", this is butler Benson in his own show. Written again by Susan Harris, so has much of the same similar humour, if a little more toned down. This is Season One Episode One from Sept 1979, and the episode is actually called "Pilot". In this first episode.......... Benson arrives to help the Governor with his transition to the mansion, meanwhile he helps prevent the deportation of beavers from the state that would inhibit the building of a multi-billion dollar industry. Benson falls in love with, and later proposes to a senator, but she finds she needs more time. Very touching episode, with great performances all round. Benson has to layoff some of the staff to balance budgets and among the ones he has to let go is the elderly pastry chef. The governor and his staff go on a break to a lodge in the mountains and they get trapped in the cabin by a snow storm. Emotions run high between the group about how to survive, as the lodge has almost no food and the phone lines are out......... Continuing the spin off show from "Soap", with butler Benson in the lead role. This is Season One Episode Eight from Nov 1979, and the episode is called "Jessica" In this episode.......... While a Baron visits the state and has meetings with the governor, he also meets Jessica Tate who is also at the house. The two start an friendship, and the Baron is later found dead in his hotel room with Jessica, while they were preparing a visit to the Opera. Some slapstick type comedy ensues after Jessica calls Benson for help, and they try to get the body back to the mansion without anyone else noticing. Fantastic to see Jessica guesting in this episode, as she and Benson really do have an onscreen chemistry - and everything reaches a lovely ending eventually, with Benson calling Mrs Tate "Jessica" for probably the only time ever. Problems arise for the governor when a Senator friend of his is connected to a scandal and the information is released to the media. It looks as if the leak came from the house, and so everyone on staff comes under suspicion. Much hilarity ensues amongst the accusations and recriminations before the real guilty party is revealed. A series of odd happenings take place in the mansion, leading to Gretchen explaining to everyone that these things have taken place before, and that rumour has it that the ghost of a former governor haunts the mansion as he was murdered here. Benson is skeptical but eventually makes a suggestion to Governor Gatling that may enable the ghost to finally rest in peace. After a death leaves a vacancy, Taylor decides to leave the Governor's house and run for public office. He tries to take one of the others with him, but due to his lack of charm, no one is remotely interested. So he decides to go it alone, with spectacularly predictable results...........
