Never Fear Falling Again!
CNaples14Do you or a loved one have a 'Fear of Falling' (FOF)? If you don't lose it, you lose it. You're Gonna Need More than One!
CNaples14I have always told my classes and clients that you must treat the act of improving your balance the same as you would if you were trying to learn a new language or a salsa step. The more you practice, the better you get! You can't come to class once a week and expect to reduce your risk for an unintended fall. I have a "golden rule" when it comes to reducing your chances for a fall, or simply improving your overall health and fitness. The rule is this... Try to do something everyday, but NEVER let more than two days pass without doing something. In this video, I go over research that was done with five women and five men to see how much improvement they would see in their balance by completing one session. The session consisted of the test subjects walking on a treadmill and being interrupted 32 times. The tread would stop and start, speed up and slow down in an attempt to get the participants to stumble and/or fall. Then, they were tested to see how much improvement would be gained after the one session. You may or may not be surprised by the results! Can Clenching Your Fists Decrease Falls in Seniors
CNaples14I had a student in class last week bring up an article she had read in a health and wellness magazine. It was written by a doctor who claimed that clenching your fists as you walk, it would reduce your risk of falling. It may sound crazy or ridiculous, but I explained how this could actually work! Is it Cognitive Decline or a Neurological Disease?
CNaples14When a friend or loved one begins to repeat themselves more frequently and seem to be a bit more fogetful than usual, how does one know if this is part of the normal process of aging or something more serious. There are tests a doctor can perform that will reveal more but "... many individuals go undiagnosed or are misdiagnosed, the actual number is likely much higher. Some experts estimate that as many as one million AMericans have PD [Parkinson's Disease]." Chris gives some tips and insight on this issue and explains how Balance University can fight against the cognitive decline. The “Stopping Addiction and Falls for the Elderly” or “SAFE Act” Bill H.R. 7618 (118th Congress) is aimed at preventing falls in our Senior community. This bill will allow funding for fall risk and balance assessments during the annual Medicare wellness checkup to seniors. Physical and occupational therapists will be able to perform these assessments and provide advice and treatment options. By identifying those that may be a bit unstable on their feet, Seniors have the best chance to stay strong, mobile and independent for the rest of their lives. Studying DNA to Prevent Falls in Seniors as we Age
CNaples14FAU received a $1 million grant to launch a DNA based fall prevention program for older adults. So, what does this really mean? What can we really learn? Well, I am as curious as you to learn what our DNA has to say about our risks of experiencing an unintended fall as a Senior. And how that prediction could play into other health road blocks we may anticipate as we age. To be honest, I'm not sure what to expect from this research... are we going to learn that one is more prone to cancer, osteoperosis, spinal stenosis, cognitive decline or a neurological disease? I hope so... but check out this short synopsis I give about the goals and parameters for this research being done at Florida Atlantic University. Heavy weights may be beneficial for Seniors
CNaples14As we age, a decline in muscle mass is a natural part of aging (also known as Sarcopenia). Estimates suggest the average adult loses one-third of their muscle mass over their lifetime. However, resistance training can reverse a lot of this muscle loss. In fact, lifting "heavy" can improve bone density, increase appetite and improve balance and mobility.
