Toma is an American crime drama television series that aired on ABC for one season from 1973 to 1974. The show is based on the real-life exploits of David Toma, a Newark, New Jersey, narcotics detective known for his unorthodox undercover methods and extensive use of disguises Starring: Tony Musante as Detective Dave Toma, Susan Strasberg as his wife Patty, and Simon Oakland as his boss, Inspector Spooner. Original Run: A 90-minute pilot aired on March 21, 1973, followed by a regular series run from October 4, 1973, to May 10, 1974, totaling 22 episodes. Production Team: Created by Edward Hume and produced by the legendary Stephen J. Cannell and Roy Huggins. Real-Life Connection: The real David Toma made frequent cameo appearances throughout the series Despite achieving favorable ratings, the series ended after only one season because Tony Musante refused to continue, having originally committed to only one year of the show. Transition to Baretta: After Musante's departure, ABC retooled the concept into the series Baretta (1975–1978), starring Robert Blake in a modified, less gritty version of the lead role. Impact on The Rockford Files: A script originally intended for Toma featuring a character named Rockford was later repurposed by Stephen J. Cannell to create the pilot for The Rockford Files.
