Heeeeere's Johnny...The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson was a landmark American late-night talk show that aired on NBC from October 1, 1962, to May 22, 1992. Hosted by Johnny Carson, it defined the format for modern late-night television and became a cultural phenomenon, earning Carson the nickname "King of Late Night Television". Host and Sidekick: Johnny Carson hosted the show for 30 years. His long-time sidekick and announcer was Ed McMahon, famous for the introduction "Heeeeeeeeeeere's Johnny!". Format: The show established the modern late-night format: an opening monologue, often featuring timely jokes and one-liners, followed by comedy sketches, guest interviews with celebrities and public figures, and performances by musicians and stand-up comedians. The format provided a launchpad for many comedians, including Jerry Seinfeld and Drew Carey. Production: For its first decade, the show was based in New York City, moving permanently to Burbank, California, in 1972. The house band, the NBC Orchestra, was notably led by Doc Severinsen for much of its run. Legacy: The show was highly influential and received numerous awards, including six Primetime Emmy Awards. Carson's retirement on May 22, 1992, was a major media event, with his final guests being Bette Midler and Robin Williams. Jay Leno replaced him as the host of the Tonight Show franchise.
