Saving Natural Teeth: Dr. Brett Gilbert Discusses Modern Root Canal Techniques and Safety
LLife Enthusiast#LifeEnthusiast #health #wellness For many, the phrase “root canal” conjures anxiety, skepticism, and conflicting advice from well-meaning friends and internet searches. On the latest episode of the Life Enthusiast Podcast, Martin Pytela sat down with Dr. Brett Gilbert, a board-certified endodontist, to unpack the modern realities of root canal therapy and clarify its role in dental and whole-body health. A Brief History of Root Canals and Modern Advances Dr. Gilbert acknowledges a truth that anyone in the holistic health world has encountered: root canals have long been the target of suspicion. Much of this skepticism, he points out, is rooted in outdated information from as far back as the early 1900s. While there were valid concerns about technique and materials in the past, dentistry, especially in the specialized field of endodontics, has seen tremendous progress in the last few decades. Advanced imaging like 3D cone beam CT scans, high-powered microscopes, and precise, bio-compatible materials have transformed root canal treatments. Where concerns about infection persisting within microscopic channels of the tooth were once justified, Dr. Gilbert explains that today’s techniques and tools can clean these spaces to a standard once impossible. Addressing the Fears: Infection and Chronic Illness Martin Pytela brings up something many holistic enthusiasts have heard, or even experienced: individuals who, after years of illness, traced their problems back to a poorly done root canal or an infected tooth. Once the tooth was removed, their health improved dramatically. Dr. Gilbert doesn’t dismiss these accounts—in fact, he agrees that failed root canals, like any lingering infection, can impact the immune system and overall health. However, he insists the conversation must be nuanced. Not every root canal is created equal, and poor technique or materials used decades ago don’t represent what’s possible today. Cases where infection persists are often the result of anatomy that wasn’t fully addressed, or a breakdown in the seal of the tooth, sometimes years after the original treatment. In such cases, Dr. Gilbert explains, retreatment—using modern technology—can save the tooth, eliminate infection, and preserve health. Beyond Black and White: Each Case is Unique One of the most important takeaways from this conversation is the need for personalized evaluation. Dr. Gilbert cautions against blanket statements like “root canals are dangerous” or “all should be removed.” He urges individuals to have their dental work evaluated by a qualified endodontist, especially using the latest imaging technology. Patients experiencing health issues with older dental work are often excellent candidates for re-treatment or even surgical approaches that weren’t available when their original procedures were done. Dr. Gilbert describes apical microsurgery, which targets stubborn infection at the very end of the root, as a powerful option to save natural teeth and support overall health. Holistic Health and Dentistry: Bridging the Gap This podcast episode makes it clear: mainstream dentistry and holistic perspectives aren’t necessarily at odds. Both Dr. Gilbert and Martin Pytela agree on the need for careful evaluation, open-mindedness, and collaboration among dental and medical professionals. Fear-based messaging has no place in patient care—what’s needed is transparent, case-by-case assessment and education. For those considering what to do about an old root canal, or facing the possibility of a new one, —Dr. Gilbert encourages you to ask these questions: Has the tooth been assessed using modern 3D imaging? Is the provider a specialist, such as a certified endodontist? What materials and techniques will be used? The mouth is, as Dr. Gilbert says, a “mirror for our overall health.” Staying curious, informed, and proactive about dental health is an essential part of holistic well-being. 10 Unusual and Healthy Uses of Common Salt
Natural CuresSalt is something that is found on most tables throughout the world. However, salt has far more uses than simply flavoring dishes. Today’s video will explore several uses for common salt. 1. Treating Canker Sores Canker sores can be pretty painful, unsightly and uncomfortable. They are an ulcer that forms on the mucous membrane inside of the mouth. Gargling with salt can treat and heal canker sores. Using two teaspoons of salt, dissolve into ¼ cup of warm water. After stirring well, swish the mixture around in your mouth for at least 20 seconds, then spit out. Repeat three to four times per day. 2. Soothing a Sore Throat Sore throats can happen for many reasons, ranging from dry air to a throat infection. Salt helps to fight infections by acting as an antiseptic. Add ½ teaspoon of salt to 1 cup of warm water. Then, stir well to dissolve the salt. Gargle with this mixture for several seconds and spit out. Repeat this for several days to relieve the sore throat. 3. Fighting Pink Eye Conjunctivitis, or Pink Eye, is caused by an irritation or infection in the eye. Salt can work as a disinfectant that can clean out the eye and relieve the redness. To treat, boil one cup of distilled water and mix in one teaspoon of salt. Allow this mixture to cool to room temperature. Then, use this solution as a eyewash by using an eyecup or an eye dropper. Repeat the drops several times throughout the day. 4. Easing Foot Pain Salt can work to help relieve sore muscles in your toes, heels, ankles and arches in your feet. Add ½ cup of salt to a small tub of warm water. Next, soak feet in the warm solution for ten to fifteen minutes. Then, pat feet dry and massage gently for five minutes. Do this once daily to relieve sore muscles. 5. Reducing Puffiness of the Eyes Salt can be mixed with water in order to relieve puffiness in the eyes that can be the result of a late night or after crying. This is because the salt can tighten your skin and remove any moisture. To use, mix ½ teaspoon of salt in a bowl of lukewarm water. Next, soak cotton balls in the warm mixture. Then, place the soaked cotton balls over closed eyelids. Repeat this for about 15 to 20 minutes for best results. 6. Working as a Natural Toothpaste Salt can be used to clean your teeth and keep your mouth free of bacteria. Salt can help remove plaque from your teeth. Simply, dip a moistened toothbrush into table salt and brush your teeth with it. Repeat this at least once per day. Alternatively, mix common salt with an equal amount of baking soda and brush your teeth with this mixture regularly. Be sure to take great care, however, as salt can be painful in any open mouth sores and it can damage your gums and tooth enamel. 7. Curing a Runny Nose Salt can help to clear the nasal passageways and remove any irritants. Mix one teaspoon of salt in two cups of warm, distilled water. Use the solution to irrigate your nasal passages with a neti pot. Repeat this once or twice per day for a few days. Be sure to wash the neti pot after each use. 8. Treating Insect Bites Salt can even neutralize insect stings and bites and disinfect the injury. It can even draw out toxins and reduce pain. Wash the affected area with antiseptic soap and lukewarm water. If the stinger still remains, remove the stinger carefully. Then, apply a paste of salt and water on the site of the sting or bite. Allow it to dry and then rinse off after 30 minutes. Have you ever heard of any of these uses of salt? Do any of these come as a surprise to you? Let us know in our comment section. How to Get Rid of Plaque - Home Remedies for Plaque and Tartar
Natural CuresPlaque is a sticky, soft film of bacteria that builds up on your teeth, dental fillings, gums, tongue, dentures and crowns. When multiple layers of plaque combine with minerals present in your saliva, it hardens into a white, chalky calcified substance called tartar. It create a breeding ground for the oral bacteria that feed on sugars from the food you eat. In addition, it forms acid during this process that breaks down the tooth enamel, leading to dental cavities. Bacteria also produce toxins causing various periodontal problems. Several factors contribute to plaque buildup, such as improper oral hygiene, bad brushing technique, poor food choices, heredity and lack of professional care. Once the tartar has mineralized on your teeth, it is extremely difficult to remove. Maintaining dental hygiene is key to preventing plaque and tartar buildup. In addition to regular dental hygiene, you can use some natural remedies to remove plaque and tartar. 1. Oil Pulling Oil pulling is an age-old practice that supports oral health and helps remove plaque from teeth. Extra-virgin coconut oil is great for oil pulling because it is high in lauric acid that has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. Swish 1 tablespoon of extra-virgin coconut oil around in your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes. Spit it out. Do not gargle with it or swallow it. Brush your teeth as usual. Repeat daily, in the morning before eating anything. 2. Baking Soda Baking soda, also called sodium bicarbonate, is a great home remedy for removing plaque. It neutralizes acids in the mouth, thereby reducing the amount of harmful bacteria. It also helps whiten and brighten your pearly whites. Put a small amount of baking soda on the bristles of your wet toothbrush and brush your teeth with it. Rinse your mouth and teeth thoroughly with lukewarm water. Alternatively, mix 1 teaspoon of salt with 2 teaspoons of baking soda. Dip a dampened toothbrush in the mixture. Brush your teeth with this powder gently. Another option is to mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with enough hydrogen peroxide to make a paste. Use it to brush your teeth and gums, spit it out and rinse your mouth thoroughly. Do not use baking soda in excess as it may damage the tooth enamel over time. 3. Guava Both guava fruit and leaves are considered excellent antiplaque agents to help remove plaque accumulated on the teeth and gums. Wash some tender guava leaves and chew them thoroughly, then spit them out. Do this daily to reduce the risk of plaque formation on the teeth. Take a piece of unripe guava, sprinkle salt on it and chew it slowly. Do this 1 to 2 times daily for a few days. 4. Aloe Vera Aloe vera is effective at dealing with gum disease caused by plaque and tartar. Being an antimicrobial, it kills the bacteria that cause plaque buildup. Plus, it fights bad breath. Slit an aloe vera leaf and extract the pulp. Rub the pulp directly on your teeth and gum line. Leave it on for 10 minutes, then rinse it off with cold water. Use this remedy twice daily. 5. Cloves Ground cloves have been widely used for ages as a home remedy to relieve toothaches. It can also be used to fight microbes in your mouth that may cause plaque and tartar. Mix 1 teaspoon of powdered cloves and a little olive oil. Apply this mixture on your teeth. Wait a few minutes, then rinse it off with lukewarm water. Do this twice a day. Also, chew 1 or 2 cloves on a regular basis to support oral health and reduce bad breath caused by the bacteria in your mouth. 6. White Vinegar White vinegar contains acetic acid that can help prevent demineralization of enamel as well as prevent and reduce accumulation of plaque. It also has antibacterial properties. Mix 2 teaspoons of white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of salt in ½ cup of warm water. Rinse your mouth with this mixture once or twice a day. 0:00 Home remedies for plaque and tartar 1:12 Remove tartar with oil pulling 1:50 How to remove plaque with baking soda 2:38 Get rid of tartar using guava 3:07 Remove plaque and tartar using aloe vera 3:40 How to remove tartar from teeth using cloves 4:09 Get rid of plaque using white vinegar Facebook: https://bit.ly/38BWbw3 Pinterest: https://bit.ly/2Irvwa6 Disclaimer: The materials and the information contained on Natural Cures channel are provided for general and educational purposes only and do not constitute any legal, medical or other professional advice on any subject matter.
