"The Untroubled Mind" (1915) by Dr. Herbert J. Hall [FULL AUDIOBOOK]
benwehrmanPublished in 1915, The Untroubled Mind by Dr. Herbert J. Hall is a classic of the early "occupational therapy" movement. Writing as a physician, Hall addresses the nervous tension, anxiety, and "nerve exhaustion" (often called neurasthenia at the time) that he saw plaguing modern society. His core thesis is that a troubled mind is often the result of misdirected energy and that the cure lies in a balanced life of work, rest, and a simplified mental outlook. "The Path Of Enlightenment" by Julius Evola [FULL AUDIOBOOK]
benwehrmanThis book is Evola’s interpretation of Tantric spirituality, filtered through his broader Traditionalist worldview. It is not a practical “how-to” manual so much as a philosophical and metaphysical exposition of what Evola sees as the most “active” and aristocratic path to spiritual liberation. Core idea Evola contrasts passive, world-renouncing mysticism with what he calls an active path of transcendence. In his view, Tantra represents a disciplined way of achieving enlightenment without fleeing the world, instead using bodily energies, desire, ritual, and will as instruments for self-overcoming. Main themes 1. Active vs. passive spirituality Evola criticizes devotional, emotional, or purely contemplative religious paths. He praises Tantra for demanding mastery, control, and inner sovereignty, rather than surrender or faith alone. 2. Power, discipline, and self-transcendence Spiritual realization is framed as a conquest, not a gift. The practitioner must dominate instincts, fear, pleasure, and even the ego itself. Enlightenment is portrayed as a state of absolute inner freedom. 3. Use of desire and the body Unlike ascetic traditions that suppress desire, Evola argues that Tantra transforms desire into fuel for awakening. Sexual and vital energies are not indulged but rigorously controlled and redirected. 4. Initiation and hierarchy The path is presented as elitist and initiatory, meant only for those with exceptional inner strength. Evola insists that misuse or misunderstanding Tantra leads to degeneration rather than liberation. 5. Transcendence of morality and dualism Evola emphasizes going beyond conventional moral categories of good and evil, sacred and profane. Enlightenment means standing above oppositions, not oscillating between them. Plato: "Phaedo" [FULL AUDIOBOOK]
benwehrmanPlato's Phaedo is one of the great dialogues of his middle period, along with the Republic and the Symposium. The Phaedo, which depicts the death of Socrates, is also Plato's seventh and last dialogue to detail the philosopher's final days (the first six being Theaetetus, Euthyphro, Sophist, Statesman, Apology, and Crito). In the dialogue, Socrates discusses the nature of the afterlife on his last day before being executed by drinking hemlock. Socrates has been imprisoned and sentenced to death by an Athenian jury for not believing in the gods of the state and for corrupting the youth of the city. The dialogue is told from the perspective of one of Socrates' students, Phaedo of Elis. Having been present at Socrates' death bed, Phaedo relates the dialogue from that day to Echecrates, a fellow philosopher. By engaging in dialectic with a group of Socrates' friends, including the Thebans Cebes and Simmias, Socrates explores various arguments for the soul's immortality in order to show that there is an afterlife in which the soul will dwell following death. Phaedo tells the story that following the discussion, he and the others were there to witness the death of Socrates.
