The jungle is in grave danger. Everyone knows it, but not nearly enough people seem to understand the seriousness and peril. The Waorani and other tribes have vowed to fight, showing up at mining sites armed with spears and poison darts. Today my family was invited to come and stay a few days in a remote Waorani villiage. Video interviews have been arranged, and even an offer to teach us the Waorani language was extended. This would put us among few outsiders to have ever learned one of the least studied languages of Earth. It is my intention to join their efforts; learn the language, help to preserve and disseminate their knowledge and traditions, and raise awareness of the struggles facing indigenous people and the consequences for us all if we fail to protect the jungle.
