Psalm 42 - When Hope is Gone, Where Do You Turn? Learning to Hope in God

When hope is gone, people are discouraged, despondent, and dismayed.

In Psalm 42, we hear of the deep despair and struggles with depression by the psalmist. We hear in the psalm a series of complaints mingled with trust.

Throughout the ages, we read of some of the godliest people struggling with depression. Among them include biblical characters like Elijah, David, Jonah, and from church history, Martin Luther.

People at this point in their lives will look for the answer by turning to others or even turning to themselves. The psalmist here resolves his struggles with inner emptiness by turning to God and purposing to develop a closer walk with God. We must learn to yearn for the Lord in the distresses of this life.

Hope is not wishful thinking. It is a confident expectation in God despite the trials and troubles of life. Be encouraged by confidently expecting God to work in your life and through your life.
