Trae Young vs Knicks Crowd...ROUND 2
Trae Young came back to the crime scene for the first time since the playoffs, and once again had the entire arena focused on him. Just like in this situation.
On the high pick, Robinson has to switch, and that means that R.J. Barret needs to come 2 steps closer to the paint to guard the potential roll by Capela. And that’s all that Trae needs, to know that Bogi is open in the corner and without even looking he fires a laser pass right on the money. Bogdanovic could have shot that but he decides to go inside and finish with a layup.
Young had NY on its knees with his flashy passing but especially with his deadly shooting. Let me show you how he got those looks. What up everybody, my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
Early offense with Capela again, and watch how Trae snakes this while staying close to Robinson and making sure that he fully switches on him. So once he gets that, goes to the side, flips a floater and splashes it.
Now this is an interesting play call, as it looks like a double screen for the shot by Huerter. He curls, but there’s no pass, instead he sets a screen for Young, and as you can see this could have been a double screen for him, but this is enough space for Ice Trae to raise up and knock it down from way outside.
In transition, look at how easily the Knicks give up the mismatch. Galinari just runs into Burks, and all of a sudden now we got a big man on him. Capela sets another screen and now it’s an even slower guy in Robinson. He drops back and this is exactly how Trae bombarded the Knicks last year in the playoffs. Bang.
And I liked this sneaky move right here. Of course it all starts with a high pick, and this time Burks is trailing him and fights over the screen, so Young pump fakes gets him in the air, short pass to Capela who gets it back to him for another open look and another 3.
He was 7 of 15 from downtown, and 13 for 25 overall on his way to 45 points and 8 assists, saving the absolute best for last, on this isolation against Taj Gibson, invites him for a dance, breaks his ankle in the process before stopping at the foul line and putting the dagger in the hearts of Knicks fans.
This was a nationally televised game so you know there’s gonna be some good slow mo angles of this, and poor Gibson he’s a hard worker and does all the right things on the court, so he definitely did not deserve this treatment in super slow motion.
At the end Trae was asked about the atmosphere and if it made things more difficult for him.
This was a must win for Atlanta in the hopes of catching the 8 seeded Nets and needing just 1 win in that play-in tournament, but honestly I don’t feel like they have a legitimate chance of doing that so they better be ready to win 2 in a row next month.
Let me know in the comments if you believe that the Hawks can somehow get out of the play in alive and move on to the playoffs. That’s it for now, subscribe and talk to you in the next one. Peace out.
