Dionne's mother Julie, who used to work in the music industry and now manages her daughter's career full-time, is an old friend of Winehouse's father Mitch. Amy took Dionne under her wing from an early age, helping to shape her taste for old-school singers - 'Aretha Franklin and Lauryn Hill,' she says without pause when I ask who her idols are. She came to wider attention in 2008 when Winehouse posted a video of herself playing guitar as Bromfield sang 'If I Ain't Got You', an Alicia Keys song, in Pete Doherty's flat. Dionne was 12 at the time and already possessed impressive soul pipes. It led to her being signed for a debut album of soul covers, Introducing Dionne Bromfield, in 2009. Earlier this year, she released a second album, Good for the Soul, a collection of sassy, uptempo soul numbers.
Even if Pete Doherty's flat doesn't sound like the kind of place a responsible adult would take a 12-year-old, Bromfield has always spoken of her godmother with respect and affection. She recently told an interviewer how much Amy loved to mother her ('She's a very Jewish mother, Amy') and has become practised at dismissing questions about her demons: 'What Amy does with her life is what Amy does with her life' Recently, however, as Winehouse's much-documented problems with drink and drugs were exacerbated, the roles reversed. 'She calls me her older sister, which is really cool and nice,' Bromfield told
me.
Bromfield does indeed seem wise beyond her years: I suspect maturity has been thrust upon her. She describes a dream in which she was sitting on a cloud - . Still, her occasional giggles are unnerving reminders of how young she is - as are her observations about the strangeness of adult behaviour: She emits a wistful sigh when I ask if she'd rather be hanging out in shopping centres with her friends than spending the summer in photo shoots and promos. When she is not performing or promoting her album, she likes doing what normal 15-year-olds do, she says - watching Harry Potter, constantly tweeting and texting from her BlackBerry, and day-dreaming. She has taken counsel from the 17-year-old Canadian popstrel Justin Bieber: 'I met him at the Brits. A lot of people were saying he's got big-headed lately but he was actually really down to earth.' Still, there are not many girls of her age who would be shrewd enough to see through him: 'He gave me the funniest piece of advice. He goes to me, "Never say never," and that was the title of his song. And I was like, "How cheesy can you get?"?'
Dionne credits her maturity to her mother Julie, 40, with whom she lives in Chislehurst. Ask about Dionne's Jamaican father and you get an indistinct squeak that seems to say 'Let's not go there' - he left when Dionne was young. She is an only child, so it's a team of two, with Julie making most of the decisions. What's her mother's best quality? 'Being horrible to me,' Dionne laughs. 'No! Being supportive. If it wasn't for her I wouldn't be here now In this industry you're around so many adults, so that's why I invite my friends to a lot of things that I'm doing, just so I've got kids my own age.' I can't help noticing that the language she uses suggests a certain alienation from her own situation, as if she has heard an adult rationalise her need to mix with her peers and decided that, yes, this is what she must do. She admits it becomes a burden at times, having so many adults reliant on her, not least financially. 'Oh yeah, it does. But like I say, I'm enjoying everything, so I'm taking it in my stride My mum always says, "As long as you're having fun, it will be fun."?'
