March of Dimes estimates that 23% of women smoke while pregnant, killing about 1000 babies a year and causing a wide range of birth defects.

Substance use in women

15.4% of women have used illegal drugs in the last year....talks about neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). It seems that nearly all of these drugs find their way into the placenta and beyond giving the baby a similar dose.
