San Jose City Council Votes to Require Fee on Gun Ownership

San Jose City Council passed the fee for gun ownership Tuesday passing the liability insurance requirement.

Gunowners would be ordered to carry insurance and pay an annual fee if a new ordinance is approved in September.

“While the Second Amendment certainly protects the right to own a gun, it does not mandate that taxpayers subsidize the possession of those guns,” Mayor Sam Liccardo said during the City Council’s meeting Tuesday. “And we need a mechanism that will both compensate injured victims and take some of the burden off of taxpayers.”

The council’s actions were taken as part of the city’s response to the May 26, 2021, mass shooting in which a Valley Transportation Authority worker used handguns to kill nine co-workers. The handguns were “legally” acquired and “registered” in compliance with California law.

Mayor Sam Liccardo (D) praised the passage of new gun controls as part of his 10 point plan while admitting they will not prevent mass shootings.

This is the second round of gun controls the city council has passed since the May 26 attack mandating during the first round all gun sales to be recorded with video and audio.
