Mounding soil over logs to make raised beds doesn't stop them from needing cover crops. The right cover crops charge hugelkultur mounds, and nitrogen-fixing trees are a great start.

What is hugelkultur gardening? It's a carbon capture method that buries wood mass under garden beds. This woody material breaks down over time, holding moisture, and returning nutrients to plans grown on the bed.

A problem with hugelkultur is nutrients being sucked out of the soil into wood stock early after installation. It takes time for logs to rot, and garden bed nutrients become food for microbes breaking down woody mass.

To address this problem: Once you have soil in place over logs, you can plant regular cover crops or nitrogen-fixing trees. Sometimes the trees volunteer. Beds will break down over time, releasing these nutrients.
