Ahrar Al-Sham Fighters Detonate Massive Tunnel Bomb Under SAA Checkpoint

Members of Ahrar Al-Sham in Syria detonate an incredibly large tunnel bomb underneath a Syrian Arab Army checkpoint in Wadi Deif in 2014.

Bombs like this were heavily used in Syria by the Free Syrian Army and other rebel factions. The way they would conduct these operations was very time-consuming, yet effective. In order to conduct an operation like this, the fighters would spend weeks, sometimes even months tunneling underneath structures and positions of the Syrian Arab Army positions. Then, they would establish massive stockpiles of explosives directly underneath their target and detonate them.

This was the next natural course for the improvised explosive device, however, it never saw true widespread use due to the amount of effort and engineering prowess required to pull a tactic like this off.
