Elon Musk reached an agreement to buy Twitter (TWTR) for roughly $44bn (£34.6bn), promising to make online speech freer and restore the “de facto public town square”.

The deal has been received with a combination of mixed and largely over the top reactions, but what power does one man have to transform free speech in the digital world in the face of new legislation like the Online Safety Bill in the UK and the Digital Services Act in Europe?
