AI Plays Super Mario Bros.: Can It Actually BEAT Bowser?! (Feat. Tom7's Learnfun & Playfun)

In 2014, Learnfun/Playfun creator Tom7 expressed a dream of seeing his AI software defeat Bowser in Super Mario Bros. While the dream has not been fully realized yet, it is now closer than ever before! This video proves that it's possible for unmodified versions of Learnfun and Playfun to beat world 1-3 and progress to the world 1-4 castle. I predict that, given the right training data, Playfun can beat world 1 completely and progress beyond.

Welcome to AI Plays Super Mario Bros. featuring Tom7's Learnfun and Playfun software, which work together to (a) learn, and then (b) play any and all classic Nintendo games. They were not written specifically to play Super Mario Bros. or any individual game, but rather to take a generalized approach that works with a variety of games. After receiving some training data (i.e., a recording of gameplay by a human player), Learnfun tries to determine the goals/objectives of the game. Playfun then "plays" the game, trying to maximize outcomes according to the objective data provided by Learnfun. It's an elegant system that's a marvel to watch when it gets things right...and very entertaining when it doesn't!
