Off to Standedge Tunnel Marsden, 21st anniversary of the reopening. Part 1 To be Continued
3 years ago
15
The original tunnel, opened in 1811, took 16 years to dig. There were no suction pipes to clear debris, only buckets, which had to be hauled up 178-metre shafts by hand. About 50 men died in the shafts.
Restored in 2001, Standedge's original travellers took two and a half hours to get through by "legging it" (pushing against the walls of the tunnel with their feet) The only trans-Pennine route now is the 127-mile Leeds and Liverpool Canal,
Tunnel is 3.5 miles or 5,029 metres or 16,499 feet long
Constructed 1794–1811
Opened 1811
Closed 1944
Rebuilt 2001
Unfortunately all tickets were sold out on the day so will have to do the trip anther day.
